I have a 97 Accord 2.2L, non-VTEC. 195000 miles. The car runs fine except when you come to a stop after the car is warm. The idle speed drops so low the car stalls.
I have a 1994 Accord that I use to swap parts. I took the EGR valve out of the 1994, cleaned it up and installed it in the 1997. The stalling problem went away but the check engine light came on with code 1491 - EGR system. I then bought a new EGR valve from Honda and installed it. The car stalls with the new EGR valve, but the check engine light does not come on. I have changed all the vacuum hoses with new hoses.
What do you suggest to fix the idle problem? Why would one EGR stop the idle problem, but a new EGR valve does not?

Might try checking the base idle and do the re-learn procedure.

 

Thanks for the response. From what I understand, you should only adjust the idle if everything else is fine. The fact that the cars idles fine with the EGR valve from the 94 Accord, but idles poorly with the new EGR tells me that everything is not fine.
I am now thinking that the EGR must be receiving vacuum at idle which is opening the EGR valve. If the EGR is open at idle, then the low idle speed may be the result of too lean a mixture. I will be testing whether the solenoid is operating correctly.
Any other thought would be appreciated.
