Default 95 Civic D16Z6 timing belt, harmonic balancer issues

My wifes civic had a bad oil leak a couple weeks ago... well thats when i found out.. she said she smelt "burning rubber" when she would drive it but never mentioned it to me... WOMEN!!!

anyways... she took it to the shop, got the gaskets changed as well as a new timing belt and water pump. yesterday, the belts came off the car. just came off while driving. had to walk back to retrieve one.

she took it back to the same shop. they're saying a bolt, which deals with the harmonic balancers broke and fucked everything up... they're talking up to 750 to have it replaced. sounds legit?

Can't say definitively with so little information, but it sounds like the shop may have done a bad crank pulley installation.

That's what I think... from my research, that bolt breaking on its own isn't a normal occurrence.

There is a good chance that they did not properly torque the bolt down. The bolt came loose then out came the key from the key way. From there it might of ground down the splines in the ID of the crank pully.

I have had this happen to me. I was lucky though. My key way on the crank was not damaged to bad so I just bougth a new crank pully and key from honda, smoothed out the galling on the crank with file. I installed properly and never had an issue with it since. That was two years ago.
