Default Is stock D16Y7 really that slow?

Heya guys.

I purchased my 96 hatch with bone stock everything at 119,000 miles about 5 months ago. The engine has been running fine ever since with the exception of the water pump.

My question is this: is stock D16Y7 really that slow? I'm afraid to mash the gas because I feel like something would break lol. Even though I feel like my motor is pretty solid, I hesitate to rev it past 5,000. I've taken a look at the motor specs and they're pretty lousy to me.

I'm not looking to get more power off of the motor because it's eventually coming out, but I would just like to see what you guys have to say about the motor itself.

Thanks guys

Oh I agree!

I know Honda D series engines are tuned more towards reliability and saving gas. That's fine with me at the time being since I'm saving for paint. But soon after its painted I'll be looking to swap. I know I have a choice of plenty of engines to swap to, maybe a B18C5. I'm still doing my research.

It's a good, reliable motor. Can you rev it out? Hell yes you can - mine sees 6k+ pulls on a regular basis.

Without some kind of serious power adders though, yes, it is slow. You can rev it out as high as you'd like, but it'll be like jerking off - you get a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, but no one else notices.

Lmao nice one.

I'll rev it to 6,000 max sometimes but it sucks tho because I have a full Apexi n1 exhaust and it'll get really loud but then I'll look at my gauge and I'm only doing 45 lol

It really is that slow. Literally just makes more noise past 3000rpm. I only ever go over 3k if I need to build revs to get onto the highway.

I went from a GSR to a CX so It's quite noticeable to me.

Yeah I know I'm overdue for a swap lol.

But since the motors so reliable my main focus on the project now is aesthetics and security and make the swap the last thing I do.

I've looked at the sticky "Building your dream car 101" , taken some advice from there, and kind of planned my build like that since it made such good sense.

What do you guys think?

It's tall geared transmission really holds it back, among other things.

And there is little difference between halfway open and wide open throttle in higher gears. Annoying.

You guys won't believe me, but I had a different story about the y7 though. My little brothers 2000 4 door d16y7 pulled a JDM b16 EJ hatch and a lot teggy LS's with bolt on's, with me driving though. It had just under 100k with just one owner when we got it. The dude never beat on it, no oil leaks and coolant leaks what so ever. Squawked second gear pretty good. Than he hydro locked it. LOL. Took it to 7k too.

I had a 96 hatch and swapped for an EX transmission. The change was pretty negligible, slightly better down low but meh.

It's a great engine, IMO.

My g/f has her stock one. '97 Civic LX - automagic. 230k on it, all original engine, internals, transmission (pretty much any part is original), she neglects maintenance on it way beyond what Honda intended, and warm-up? lolz. That thing is roaring to life from a cold start, haha.

Only thing I remember replacing on it was the coil. In the last....6 years? Also had some oil changes.

Now I **HAVE** held down the pedal on this thing and prayed nothing broke, while I don't even think it'll be a 16s car, it holds together just fine. TBH, if the track was still open for the season, I'd take it out there in a heart beat. Doesn't burn any oil, either.

So is it fast? No, not even slightly. Is it going to fall apart on you? Probably not. I mean the engine is only as good as it was cared for, but in general, stock Honda motors are pretty damn tough provided they're not beat on their whole life (but even then..).

EDIT:
Forgot to mention, she gets 40+ mpg if she's light on the throttle on the highway with that thing. Think her highest is 44.

EDIT 2:
As far as revving it goes, I've held the gas on hers until it goes to the redline, so meh.

Before my mini me when i was still getting used to my car with my y7, I walked on my buddys 09 si a few times lol he was the one who taught me how to drive, ironically he Was still a very shitty driver. all i had at that time was ac and power steering delete. It was fun for me, and that was all that mattered at the time. I loved my Y7

You're right. I don't. Currently owning a 6th gen coupe and hatch I should know. This car is slow. Period.

Eagle rods, Vitaras, ARP head bolts and a rebuild, GoAutoworks turbo kit, aim for mid 300 whp, tune, get 30+mpg while walking on B series. Call it a day.

Get real. It's an econo-box. A grocery-getter. It was built for mileage, not speed. So what if a Toyota is slower.

LOL, i knew it, but still just giving my side of the story. if the motor was still alive i would do a quick run with a buddies LS bolt on's and you guys can go from there, but he has a y8 in there now, slower than his y7 IMO.

Don't care what you've driven before. It isn't germane. I own one and it is slow. Going up hills it can't get out of it's own way. If you people actually think a Y7 is fast then I don't know what to tell you.

D-Series motors are slow in general doesn't matter witch one you have. Fail to see what there is to discuss here?

No you will not break it if you step on the gas and beat the **** out of it. What you will do however is waist good mpg.

Nothing to be proud about or announce to people.
