01 civic the transmission is making a grinding noise
I have an 01 civic si with 225000 km on it and i replaced the clutch about 3 months ago. The transmision is making a grinding noise while driving and while im just idling. What could this be?
Then the most likely scenario is that your main input shaft bearing needs to be replaced. To do this you will need to remove the transmission from the car, split the case in half, replace the bearing, and put it all back together.
Just hope that the bearing is the only thing that needs to be replaced and that no other components have been damaged.
I strongly suggest using a Helm's service manual to guide you if you have never done this kind of work before.
Had there been a "hissing" noise present before this latest problem occurred? And would this "hissing" noise go away when you pressed the clutch pedal down?

I dont remember a hissing noise but i will definetely do that and let u know how it goes. I have a shop with a lift to do it at so i will be doing it properly.
i have same problem with mine. gears 1 and 2 and quieter in 3. also in neutral...... I have been told its either Throwout bearing or the inputshaft bearing. let me know what yours is please!

Noise during acceleration and in neutral is a result of your MIS bearing being faulty. It's a cheap part, but quite a PITA to replace.
I was also wondering whats the harm if I just leave it as it is and carry on driving?
I have the exact same issue. Although I had a clutch overhaul done at 65000 km. Apparently the Honda techs forgot to replace the clutch bearing too. I put my foot down on the clutch, and the grinding noise goes away. This can be more obvious as you increase the revs to 3000 rpm in neutral. Until you press the clutch, and it goes away.
You can definitely hear it in first and second gear in low revs. Becomes less audible in 3rd, and almost not audible at all in 4th.
I've been thinking of replacing the bearing, but the tech advised me to let it be, until I experience a serious issue with the clutch or something.
Hmm, makes me wonder.

Input shaft bearing. (inside the transmission, not easily accessible)
Depends on how bad it is and how hard you drive. As previously noted, mine has been hissing for years. I just haven't bothered replacing it. (yet)
The MIS bearing is not part of the clutch assembly, it's inside the transmission and can only be accessed by removing the transmission and splitting case open. There's a little more involved, but you get the idea.
If it's already making that much noise, I wouldn't wait long to replace it. Mine hisses, but there is no rattle or grinding noise. (yet)

Right, so I need to have the MIS bearing replaced which is apparently not part of the clutch assembly, but the transmission itself. Seems like a cumbersome process.
Does this have anything to do with the car jerking back and forth as the revs fall between 2000 and 1000 or lower, in first and second gear?
I found this info very useful, thanks!
And the grinding noise isn't very prominent. But it does go away though when I put my foot down on the clutch. Also sometimes I feel, the gears don't shift that smoothly. And I really have to engage the clutch completely and shift properly before releasing, or you hear that dreaded grinding sound that leaves a bad taste in your mouth!

How many miles have you put on the car since you had the clutch serviced? Was it making noise before you had the work done?
It's not fun. You'll want a good manual if you don't already have one. Google "61S5C01" and get one. This is what you're after.
Not likely. Does it usually happen during traffic congestion?
Yes it does actually. Let's say I give it about 1000 or 1500 rpms to get moving in first gear, the rpm suddenly drops, I feel a jerk as if the engine doesn't want to respond right away, and then the car starts moving! Similarly, when I'm slowing down in first or second gear, without the brakes, below just 1800 rpm I think, this jerking starts..it's intermittent though. And certainly doens't take away from driving pleasure. At first I thought it was clutch or flywheel related. But now I'm quite certain it's the transmission. Only happens in first and second.
Welcome!
You'll know if something else is wrong once you get it disassembled. Check for debris, especially if the bearing cage is missing!
The workshops here have a knack for making matters worse at best.. so I'd rather not have it disassembled for now!

***It's done 15000 kms more after the clutch overhaul. Yep, the noise was there before. The clutch has gotten soft since the overhaul, the engine response maybe a little better in the lower rpm range, but that's it.
No effect on shifting gears.
