Your Pro Opinion Please before servicing - 2003 Odyssey engine issue
hello all,
I have a 2003 Odyssey with 170K mileage, No problems really up until recently.
Last week, Drove home from work (about 45 miles) no issues, drove it again about 10 miles that night, no issues. the next morning went to start it up and heard a intermittent clanking noise, best described as sounding like a loose heat plate rattling on a muffler in rhythm... clink clink clink....pause... clink clink clink... pause...
Got int the car and back up, put it in drive and the van ran rough when I pressed on the gas. Engine light was now flashing. Drove about 1000 feet, turned around and came back to the drive. Shut off the engine and started it again. (still thinking, loose heat plate combines with bad gas..... i dunno).
started fine and idled ok... still clink clink clink...pause... pressed on gas and rough shaking. shut it off.
yesterday inspect Checked fliuds, oil was down a quart but thats about it. moved the van off the driveway to get daughters car. it started fine with same symptoms.
Decided to call a tow truck today, went to move it back on the driveway, it started to crank and then the high end pitch "whiiiiirrrrrrrr" which at that point I was no longer confused and believe it is symptomatic of a timing belt. Obviously it wont start - which i dont want it started knowing now it could be a timing belt issue.
Do you think there was any more damage done? Is there anyway to find out if the valves got damaged without pulling the head off? I haven't done internal engine repair since I was a teenager... so I am sending it out for repair. I would think a blown engine would produce more of a knocking sound than a clink noise.
The quotes I am getting are also including water pump and tension pully etc.. as well.
Conrads wants $958 out the door
Honda dealership - $840 out the door
Obviously assuming there is no other motor damage.
What would you do it you were me? Any thoughts? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. You are the doctor(s)
- Jim

i work for honda and we do timing belts every 105k or 7 years which ever comes first
the clink clink you heard was probally the tensioner going bad and not keeping the timing belt tight if it jumped timing or broke the belt there is possible valve and or piston damage the only way to know is tear it apart and see what damage is there i recommend taking it to the honda dealer just because of the oem part availability
sorry to hear about the bad luck
