Default Buy or Pass...Real Owner Feedback...

Should I buy or pass on a 2006 Civic Si with 56000 miles on it for 12700. Galaxy Grey and has intake and cat back..

Car is MINT its my buddies and I know for a fact he doesnt beat it... He took well care of it...

BUT should I buy or pass??

My only concern is the grinding/lockout/notchy shifts... I havent drove it yet so I dunno if it does... but I want a sport car that I can "hammer down on" so to speak on the track for AutoX... but dont want to be left in the dust not being able to shift....

IF the car shifts well, what are the chances of the problem coming up?

And if it does are the fixes that involve bushings/fluid change/short shifter/CMC a "fix" or a bandaid?

And does the problem just happen or is it from driver repeat error shifting?

Thanks

12 flat would be a fair price for the car. Mine has about 80k miles on it and can expect 9.5k for mine.

I've never had issues with my car. Don't know how these issues popped up.

Only thing I changed was the clutch and that was in part to alot of my friends/girlfriends beating on it.

Have an inspection done on the car and just buy it as if its coming from a stranger. Take proper care of regular maintenance and you'll have no issues.

This doubt, is it because your friend does not know how to properly drive manual? or the stories of other people who don't know how to drive manual and there problems because of that.

The issue is the 3rd gear synchro/sleeve, honda has since updated it(happened on their v6 6mt too). Is your friend the original owner, if not it may have already became a problem and fixed. Also not to be a dick, but can anyone expect to buy a car with 100k+ miles and not be prepared for some possible issues to come up? Good luck!

It sounds like you're looking for a reason NOT to buy it. It has no problems, you can have it checked out. The issue outlined above with 3rd is addressed by Honda so what is your worry?

Note: just remember you're buying the car 'as is' and from a friend. Be sure not to let it destroy your friendship of something DOES break on the car... your friend offers no warranty. In other words, "don't be that guy."

Would be helpful if you provided some pics of the car, btw.

I just wanted clarification about the transmission that is all.. I dont want to get the car and a month down the road the tranny starts to grind and I have to replace the syncros...

The problem may be addressed from Honda, but when the tranny breaks Honda is gonna make me pay out of pocket for it.... Now if it was a recall and covered for free from them I would have no doubts buying this car...

I just dont want a tranny problem to develop like most other Si owners been experiencing... how likely are they to show up?

If not its a real simple fix. I bought my 06 with the bad second gear but no third gear pop. I took the transmission apart (never done this before) and replace every gear and synchro on the one shaft. That was 25k ago and it's fine.

I only run amsoil (change every other oil change) and I did the em1 Cmc swap as well.

If you did have to replace syncros you'd only have to replace the 3/4 gear synchro.
You should be in the clear and 12,700 isn't a bad price for 55k miles.

Depends on your problem. If the third gear pops out yes. If it starts to have trouble getting into second then the gear needs to be replaced. It's not a synchro problem. It's a weak gear problem.

Plus since he said he wouldn't ever do something like that and if it ever came to it. Why not just replace everything. It's not much more and you already have the transmission apart.

Rough estimate of cost to rebuild the tranny?

Honda Tuning has a 3 part Si project that covered the shifting

They address the clicking in the clutch pedal and mis-shifting with an EM1 clutch master and shift linkage from hybrid racing.

They claim the issue with the clutch pedal is in the master cylinder, that the stock FG/FA master cylinder has some plastic in the cylinder and some valving that slows down the clutch fluid which causes problems with high rev shifting.

They say that the shifting is more direct feeling with the hybrid racing shift linkage cables because hybrid replaces all the plastic with stainless pieces.

Master Cylinder w/ braided line $175:
http://www.hybrid-racing.com/store/8...r-upgrade.html

Shift linkage cables $350:
http://www.hybrid-racing.com/store/h...-06-civic.html

I believe the dealership charges around 1300 to repair the 3rd gear

Edit, if the links don't work just google it.

this should be your first mod, high rev shifting often leads to missed gears. This and flashpro.
