Default New timing belt new problem.

Well my wifes 02 accord had 234000 miles on it without ever changing the timing belt so i figured it was due for a change. I did some research and decided i could do it myself. Everything went fine and i did everything just like the write up said but after getting everything back together the car has what sounds like a bearing whine coming from the camshaft area and the car feels like its down on power. Its just very sluggish when driving. Can someone help me out? The only thing i can think is maybe i got the timing off a tooth. I also wonder if i may have tensioned the timing belt to much and put a strain on the camshaft bearing. Anyone got any ideas. Is there anyway to check timing?

The only way to find out is take it apart and check.

I would suggest lifting the valve cover, removing the top cover, to access the camshaft sprocket. From here, you can check the tension and view the tensioners, springs and belts, to ensure everything is in order. I just replaced my timing belt using the 'sweet, awesome, fantastic,' write up from this website. With the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket, I recall being able to slightly slide the belt, back and forth slightly, without being able to slide it off completely.

You can check the timing, by verifying that the two timing marks on the camshaft sprocket line up with the valve cover surface simultaneously with the lower cover 'gun sight' with the 'single' mark on the harmonic balancer.

A wine usally means there is to much tension on the belt. There is no bearing for the cam shaft.. I would correct it asap at it can cause failures of components

Yes I agree. If the belt is too tight, the shafts and gears will bend inwards and in no time you will need new components or even a newer engine. I suggest bringing the accord to a local shop and have them service the timing belt. Some cars have auto tensioners, does the accord have them? The Prelude does.

Ya the whine is coming from the tensioner. Crack it just barely enough to relieve some tension

^^^ What these guys said.

Did you buy any chance leave an extra bolt in the tensioner that wasn't there when you originally took it apart?

When doing mine, I left the lock bolt in and had the same whining problem till it was removed.
