what makes aem better than another cold air intake?
Nothing really. It's all about the name brand recognition. AEM is like the Nike of the intake world. There are many other brands of shoes that will get you the same results and be just as comfortable, but Nike is a name everybody respects. The only real differences would be the quality of the intake arm material vs. the AEM and the filter- but as long as it has a K&N on it, then who cares because it's the same quality filter.
AEM has the quality, perfect fitment, high quality filters, they also use a special coating on the piping to keep it cooler, oh and they look sexy . As far as I know AEM has some of the best hp gains around. If not AEM i've heard some good things about Injen intakes
most cold air intakes out there are imitations... not quite the same as the original ones that are proven to perform.

As far as I know, AEM CAI has 2.75" pipe.
The generic CAI I bought from Ebay has 2.5" piping diameter.
Also, from the pics, I *think* AEM has gentler bends not 90 degrees bends this promotes better air flow.
Guys with AEM CAI, feel free to correct me on AEM bends.

Sorry, but I disagree. The INJEN pipes are welded to look very good from the outside but if you look in the tube, you will see that all the "mess" is on the inside. That hurts airflow and says they value looks over performance. Also, the AEM pipes are CNC mandrel bent so there really is not much, if any, welding. As to the welds breaking? I very much doubt that, but If so, I would bet that AEM would replace it for free. Would anyone else?
Any actual pictures of a broken pipe?
I didn't think so.

injen intakes are also CNC mandrel bent.
the welding i was refering to is the brace for the
intake to the frame of the car. There is no other welds
besides that one. Secondly, AEM cold air intakes are 2.75"
But if you get the injen Short ram air intake and cold air
extension, they are both 3" in diameter, so you get more air
into the engine. No i dont have pictures but if you do a search you
may be able to find people that have problems with their aem intake
welds (we went over that before).
the quality and customer service of a brand name. they have much higher consistant quality.
I'd go for the Mugen or Comptech Icebox though.

This intake is very popular because magazines use them alot in there project cars,so readers whant the same stuff that the magazines use.Thats why the most popular headers are DC,pulleys are Unorthodox.
You arent just buying a name, you are getting something with quality and dyno tested and tuned performance. One of the current mags for this month(if anyone knows exactly which one refresh my memory) has a RSX tested with a whole bunch of intakes, the AEM CAI produced 20HP over stock!!, thats incredible for any bolt-on. The rest of the intakes fell below it several hp at a time. Injen did well, and so did DC etc. but pretty much all the top brands took the top slots for dyno proven hp.
I dont put alot of credit into the whole "icebox" thing, especially not the "do it yourself" routine. Unless someone can show a dyno sheet proving otherwise.
Your best bet will always be to get a namebrand intake, bottom line.

It's funny, how if you pay the magazine company enough, you can have them say whatever you want!!

I like the AEM's, somebody I know has an Injen. The Injen looks good, but the layout is almost exactly the same. They both cost a lot too...
AEM Cold Air Intakes are proven to give you good gains. They're also CARB Legal and have the Carb Plaque on the intake itself. Generic CAI don't have it and they're considered illegal.
