Default Air/Oil Separator

I have a 2005 Civic SE (Canadian) . I have been on a hunt for the location of the PCV and with the help of another forum I was able to find it. The PCV is located next to the oil filter. It screws into something called the air/oil separator. I just purchased a Haynes manuel and it confirms this. The manual also states that this air/oil separator is supposed to be removed. It does not say that to clean it but rather to "use a solvent and gasket scraper to remove residual gasket material. Is this supposed to act like a catch can for excess bypass junk? Has anyone ever serviced this?

it is like a catchcan. It helps relieve crankcase pressure.
