Not in the engine bay. I mean inside the car. I have to go pick up a longblock and tranny and the biggest car I have is my EG.

I figured I can just remove my front seat to fit the longblock, and the tranny will fit in the hatch area.

Anyone else done this before?

 

Only about a half dozen times. Do yourself a favor and lay down a LARGE tarp.

 

Personally I would be installing the motor from underneath the car.

Personally, I like Ruffles potato chips more than Lays because Ruffles have ridges.

A tarp and a blanket to absorb some of the spilled crud would be good. Old towels to put between the motor and anything you don't want gouged. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. That's a lot of weight on one side. You could separate the trans from the block and place that in the hatch, too.

 

Or on the seat behind the driver's seat, to keep weight balanced.

 

I just got back from the machine shop with my block, I just put a nasty old comforter in my back seat and drove it there. I bought a tranny a while back and just put it in the trunk.

 

When I have to use my hatch to haul and engine I usually put it in the trunk and use a tie down strap to secure it to the back seat. This way it doesn't move around and who ever is helping me can still sit shotgun.

 

Your right, When I first read it sounded like he was wanting to create a rwd civic. I guess I have never considered using my hatch to haul stuff but I also have truck so I wasn't in that mindset.

Not if the engine is on a cherry picker. Also, 5th gens have the fold down portion. If you're going to try the hatch, remove the spare tire cover and the spare tire. Consider removing the lower hatch to put the motor in then replace before driving off. If you leave the lower hatch in place, you'll likely blow your back.

I've driven my disassembled engine around in my 6th Gen hatch. But, my hatch only opens up making it so I don't have to bend over as much and I placed down a 5/8" sheet of plywood to reinforce the seats and spare tire cover.

 

Hm. I may need to find a better car then haha. The engine/tranny is about 4hrs away from me. It looks like it may not be worth the drive and the hassle, now.

 

I have a truck now, thank god When my ek was my main car last winter, i popped out the passenger seat when ever i needed an engine moved.

I've fit fully assembled long blocks in the trunk area without having to remove the tailgate or the spare but I'd have to agree that removing these two things would've made life easier. I've even done a couple with the intake manifold installed (facing inward obviously). Biggest engine I stuffed in the trunk was an H22, fully assembled, no cherry picker assistance, etc.

 

That's why I love the EG hatch you can fit almost anything with the seats laid flat.

 

Yeah I use my eg dx coupe with passenger side seat removed and pin that holds the passenger door from going too far out removed and I gets plenty room for an engine and put the trans in the trunk works great and saves you gas vs a truck-- and no cherry picker, shimmy engine to passenger side and 2 man lift it up into place
