Default Head Gasket - Coolant in water jacket

Hi! I just joined this forum, and I am replacing the head gasket in my 1988 civic. Just got the head off, and I see that the jacket surrounding the cylinders is full of coolant. is this normal? I see from reading the forums elsewhere that I can drain this by removing the plug on the engine block. Is this recommended?
Thanks

Yes that is normal (think about it). Yes you can drain by removing the plug (again think about it).
