IACV faulty? little help.... ?
Just pulled the IACV off 94 Honda Civic...
I am not a mechanic. I build websites and fix computers. This is my first attempt at trying to fix a car since I replaced my clutch cable in my 74 VW Bug way back in '89!
It had its engine replaced 2 years ago and all was good. It sat for 6 months and the it started having idle issues: (After cold start)
It starts fine, idles high for a few minutes then "idle seeks" or "hunting idle."
If I drive it (its a manual), runs fine in gear. Just at idle is the problem.
I took it to the mechanic and he came out and listened to it (its now out of warranty for time, not mileage). He said it was a valve or sensor. I got the impression he knew what it was. Said he'd charge $150 to a diagnosis. Can't fault the guy...
After googling this issue I started it and waited until the fluctuations started, unplugged the IACV electrical plug and idle returned to normal.
Turned off car and removed IACV. I do have continuity on the solenoid, cleaned valve and o-ring and seals all look good. Reassembled and still have same problem.
How can I be sure IACV is good? Can I use a 12 volt battery to test the solenoid (I read hooking up directly to car battery, but they weren't very clear about how to do that)?
Like I said, not a mechanic and don't have any specialized tools, but am determined to fix this on my own with the help of an online community...
Thanks for the help, Rick

There wasn't much **** in it. Put it back together and still had the problem. Then read a thread about the solenoid being bad and to check for continuity. I pulled it back out and I do have a closed circuit. It's still out of the car and I'm staring at it right now...
I guess I'll reiterate, can I check to see if I hear the solenoid working? Is it a simple 12v test? Can I connect it to a couple batteries?
From something I read earlier, hooking it right up to the car battery scares me.
I'm not a mechanic!
Can I do that?

Nope. Once warm up is done, I get the hunting idle or idle seeking. Whatever they call it. I'm not a mechanic.
This was really bugging me but am learning so much now that I'm determined to fix it myself.
And I'm making progress and I'm actually kinda having fun now...
I did a bunch of things today that I think might help this community help me to fix this thing but I'm going to create a new topic tomorrow with all the new info.
rickshadey is my user name. If your symptoms are the same, it might be worth looking up tomorrow...
Good Luck!

here i might be able to help out in stead of some bs answers your getting. clean the iacv and re install. if it continues remove the FITV and clean it then take the front plate off of it and screw the plunger back in. if you dont know what im talking about or just need a how to this site has a great write up on how to clean both, if the problem still continues replce the iacv. dont buy one at a local parts store go to the junk yard and pick a couple up. (they tend to go out alot) if it still continues then check for vacuum leaks on or around the intake manifold. just take a can on brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray the intake manifold in little bursts and listen for a change in idle
Alright, have done what you said except for replacing IACV.
I created another post that is way more in depth to what I've done so far. Thanks for the suggestions...
