Big HP guys Oil of Preference..800+whp
Just curious as to the oil of preference for you big hp guys. On my SR20VE motor i ran standard clearances on the bearings this last time around which I have always done in the past with my motors and was fine.
My old built motor had 16k miles on it, used mobil 1 15w50 its entire life, standard oil clearances on the rod and mains, when I tore it down even after taking severe detonation its last time out which bent the ring lands and broke the rings on my CP pistons, all the bearings looked great, still looked like new. The motor was ran hard all the time, several runs down the strip and so on. It was making 430whp on pump, and 530whp on race gas
This motor I just built I once again used standard oil clearances, 15w50 mobil 1, and it made 716whp, The motor ended up spinning a bearing due to oil pump damage, not saying a different oil or extra clearance on the bearings would have prevented it but who knows.
Anyways my plans for the refresh are a to go with the ACL bearings with the .001" extra oil clearance on the rods and mains to compensate a bit for thicker oil and shooting for 900+whp. Just wondering if you big hp guys have a preference to what oil you use and what has worked well for you.

Im also a big valvoline fan, love their 85w140 gear oil. Its been a life saver in the weak b13 trannies. Went from breaking stacks every month on 3 different gear oils to the last one lasting 9 months and counting when i went with 85w140, and that was at even more power that broke the previous 3. 3 times the miles of the other 3 stacks combined.
Was debating on going with their synthetic 20w50.
Decision decisions.

It really comes down to what your using it for and the clearances you run in your motors. Many oils though claim the viscosity is the same your fooling yourself. Some oils are better then others when using ethanol or alky based fuels which wash cyl down and will quickly change the viscosity of the oil. others are formualated for gas. Really your choice in how you build your motors and what you really trying to achieve with them. Rule of thumb. Loose is fast.
But choose in a race oil that has lots of zinc.

Well the motor is for drag, I use C16 race fuel all the time and dont have any plans on using anything else. Keeping the setup as simple as I can. I have enough fuel to support about 980-1000whp on C16 and dont want to complicate or put out more expense on a fuel system when its not needed.
Motor wise, All the internals will be good to go for that kind of power. Again prior I ran the clearances relatively tight, only difference from this motor to the last one that had 16k miles on it was this one was revved between 9700-10,200 rpm vs 8000-9000 most of its life.
This is strictly going to be a drag motor.

I run Brad Penn 20w-50 in my car because I run e85 as well as looser p2w clearances and looser bearing clearances. Ethanol doesnt mix with oil so the added protection that the additive package in that oil provides, is necessary for me. Brad Penn is relatively inexpensive if you know where to look as well
I run FCS racing oil, gets me onto the trailer every time!
Nah, Brad Penn 20w50 here, always treats me right. I change the oil when I am forced to, maintenance is overrated.

I run 20-50 wal mart brand oil w/ e98 and just change it every race or every other race depending on how close together they are. I've checked my bearings after the first 6 months of this engine being alive and they looked great.
Its just added piece of mind I guess.
Ive always had very good results with valvoline vr-1 50wt. Every 20 passes or so id pull the pan and check bearings, and i once a year i was pulling the motor apart. Everything always looked brand new. But it was only a little over 700hp.
