Default vin location on d16y7

hello

I just purchased a 96 coupe with a d16y7. It had low miles and I was excited but I noticed the title said it had more miles on it than what the odometer reads. I'm fairly certain I got scamed but I would like to check the vin on the engine so i can be certain. Is it a plate on the engine or is it stamped into the block?

Thank you in advance

bottom of block on the driver side.
for the trans, it's right on the front of it.

They probualy swapped a lower mile cluster into the car.

If there is no vin on the back of the block, you have what we like to call a stolen motor.

Depends where you are. I don't know if things have changed, but the recyclers/junk yards here always used to cut the vin tags off.

I've been accused on this website of having a stolen trans because it had the tag removed... I know exactly where it came from and it came off right before I bought it. Then again I haven't picked anything like that up since 2003 or so.

Hmm. That's the first I'm hearing that, which is a good point.

Not to thread jack or anything, but can I ask why they removed the tag?

I normaly wont accuse someone of having a stolen part, beucase you the tag is gone, you can't prove anything.

Don't know what the reasoning is, it was always just the way it was done with used parts. Maybe things have changed now that thefts have become so common.

To the OP, there should be a vin tag just above the oil pan behind the cat/manifold on the front of the motor.

oh okay, thank you everyone for the help. Will the engine number tell me anything or is that a waste of time?

i'm not sure the correlation between whatever motor is in the car and whether or not your cluster has been swapped.

If your car works fine, why worry about it? Nothing you can do about it now anyway.

Yep, the holes are there, but there's no VIN tag. I think the integras have VIN tags back to '96 though.

No, I seem to recall NOFX saying the same thing and she's in Washington.

I wanted to see the vin on the engine so maybe, just maybe the previous previous owner swapped it along with the cluster. I wanted to see if the engine vin matched the windshield, firewall vin. If they did, i would know that he only replaced the cluster and would look into legal action maybe. i thought i bought a 100k mile car but it looks like i bought a car that has anywhere from 200k to 270k miles on it.

thank you all for the info. I have another problem - My harness for a obd2 -> obd1 has a wire that has been ripped off the harness. it is the iacv wire on the ecu but i don't know where to plug it in to the back of the harness. Anybody willing to help me figure it out?
