Default 96-00 power to manual rack and pinion swap

Whats up guys , Im currently running a looped ps rack on my car ( 00 ej8) i just did the breather set up but i have yet to drive the car with the breather set up , Im considering swaping to a 96-00 manual rack , for those of you who have done it i have a couple of questions,

is it easier to turn the wheel while stationary? would the difference be that noticeable with a manual than a looped set up?

Do i need to change the subframe too for a manual one ( i looked through majestic honda part numbers for the subframe between PS and non PS and they seem to be the same.

Yes, a manual rack is geared lower for less operator effort.

If the part numbers are the same then no. The '92 - '95 Civics had different subframes and while you could use a power subframe with a manual rack it required shimming up a bushing. IIRC the lower universal joint on the column needs to be swapped as well.

Interested in the truth on the 96-00 conversion also.

There's as many posts claiming the auto rack converted to manual has a more desirable steering ratio than the factory manual.

It depends on what your definition of desirable is. A looped power rack is quicker lock to lock. A proper manual rack steers easier at the expense of not turning as quick.

Well another thing is that your not pushing fluid thru the system like the manual.even with pump deleted and looped, your still pushing fluid from side to side.

Also, yoou will need the joint that connects the column to the rack. its 29 bucks.

I call it a rag joint, idk what honda calls it

I looked close to a year ago and it was 29, seems supply and demand has raised the price.

From what year/model did you get the universal joint from. Im doing the conversion on my 98 civic but the stock joint is alot bigger than the manual rack I bought. So I've been having a hard time finding what joint I need that will fit properly

I'm looking at doing this on my 96 HX, since I need to swap the leaky rack out. manual rack is less expensive than the power rack, and from past experience with my 93 CX, the manual rack is much more user friendly than the power rack when it's not got power. I've not tried the delete kits. I figure if the rack is leaky and f'd up, it's probably time to service pump and lines, and at that point, I'll just pull it all and forget about power steering. I didn't miss it for the 12 years I drove the CX. It's nice enough on the HX to have, but much more to go wrong.

The big question I have is the "Joint B Steering" Everyone keeps quoting the part 53323-S04-003 as if it's the part you need, but that is the only part listed for my HX, which as far as I know only came with power steering. The CX model has two part numbers listed, since it was offered with both power and manual steering. I'm thinking the proper steering joint is 53323-SM4-013. It's the first on the CX parts list, and of course it doesn't show up for cars that only came with PS. Can anyone who has swapped power rack for manual confirm this???

Thanks!
