Default 1/4 or 1/2 steel for diy seat brackets?

Im looking to make some seat brackets myself and would like to know if 1/4 in stainless steel is good enough or should I go 1/2 in? Thanks.

Idk. Its those weldable steel from lowe's, etc...

1/4" is more than enough, your seatbelts do most of the actual holding.
