Icon2 Oil Pan/Gasket Question

Hi there i have a question about this gasket. My item from autozone just arrived and i was wondering is it necessary to buy a rtv black sealant for this? or i don't need any sealant for this item? .

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...38824_11985_0_

Also i brought an oil pan from autozone. Will there be any leak?

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...4426_114034_0_

Just to be correct i have to tight all the screws with my hand and torque about 8lb is that correct?

Hope someone can help me with this. thank you

i always use sealant JUST incase. I also now use a drip of locktite on my pan bolts because they ALWAYS come loose. Just make sure the surfaces are CLEAN and oil-free, clean off with brake cleaner.

make sure you bolt down the oil pan evenly. it helps it sit right and not scrunch up and possibly cause a leak

Always use sealant for oil pan gasket. The pressure in it will leak through microscopic hole. Sealant will eliminate that.

yes i use honda bond, but even with that he can still have leaks if he bolts it down improperly/unevenly.

also since the oil pan will be off it will be a good time to really give it a nice cleaning. get all the gunk out of there. and give the oil pick up a good cleaning. get rid of any build up or gunk blocking the screen. you will need to replace the gasket for that to. but its no more than 3 bucks.

Yes. That is true. Start one by one but don't tight the bolts. Put all of them in just to hold the pan. Then tight them evenly around. Then go around to tight. Don't put too much torque in.

I usually don't use silicon when doing oil pan gaskets on my honda...I can't say I'v ever had an issue with it. However I would not be opposed to using a thin layer on both sides of the gasket. As far as how tight...i would snug all the bolts up up then go back and make them just a titch tighter you can usually feel out if the bolts are approximately the same torque... 8ft/lbs isn't much. If you do use silicon a plus is usually some of that silicon will get on the treads of the bolts so it works as sort of a "loctite" since these bolts are only torqued to 8 ft/lbs.

is there a certain pattern you have to put the bolt in? or you can just go from one to one without criss cross? so the fel pro gasket doesn't have any sealant? if not when i buy an rtv black where do i fill the sealant? any help would be appreciated. Do i just put the sealant all over the oil pan? and then put in the gasket and have another sealant layer on top?

It's always the best idea to start in cross (X) shape. That way, it is applied even pressure to the gasket.

Always make sure it's mounted evenly like ^ they said. And make sure it's adjusted properly and doesn't move around. I personally wouldn't have gotten one from AutoZone, since I straight up won't buy less than NAPA parts. But if it works hey, go for it.

What LadyCamouflage said is true. If you are gonna buy gasket of any kind from AutoZone or any other auto part stores, always check in front of them. Check for any cracks. 2 or 3 out of 10 usually have cracks. Or you can pay twice what it cost at dealer and get it done right. 13 dollars at AutoZone and 25 dollars at dealer.

Would you rather NOT put a sealant on top and see what happens, or do it and be more comfortable with the repair? When it comes to cars, don't take short cuts. In the long run it can be a bad idea, and put even more wear on your vehicle.
