With a turbo setup, good tune, and the proper fuel, these are the 'safe' ranges for the given engines. People have made more power than what I've listed, but realistically, i think these would be the goal numbers to shoot for.

Stock D - 220whp
Stock LS - 300-350whp

Vitara D - 400whp
Piston/rod LS - 450whp

The D series is going to be cheaper all around, but it will make less power and have a different powerband than the LS. That's not to say it can't be fast, but all other things equal, the larger displacement LS (and the fact that its a dual cam) will ultimately allow it to make more power.

Your best bet is to search the Forced Induction forum. There is a 100+ page Turbo LS thread floating around...it would give you ideas for the setup as well as realistic goals for the setup

Compare weights of the hatch and coupe you are talking about OP and then go from there. I am sure the hatch will weigh less than the coupe.

If you use the LS, get a different transmission.
