b18c1 releases black smoke in high rpms?!?!? Opinions..
Wassup guys and gals! Just wanted to get your guys' opinions on what the problem may be. So my 98 b18c1 with 116,xxx miles likes to release the nasty black smoke (running really rich) when I hit vtec and high rpms. I also burn a good amount of oil as well. Lots of people told me to get it checked. So yeah, what possible problems may it be? Wanted to get your guys' opinions before taking it into a shop to get it checked. Let me know! Thanks

I am upgrading to a 2.5" exhaust with a 2.5" header in the spring. And that is when i'll be getting it tuned. I've noticed my car running rich before the tasteful mods though. When it just had a short ram and the apexi n1.
All those air flow upgrades would cause it to run leaner than stock. I don't think it's fuel unless you have larger injectors. Are you sure you're not burning oil?
Yes I am burning oil. Obviously more when I hit Vtec. I am always having black residue around the tip of my exhaust (signs of running rich). I feel like after all the parts my car has been running "leaner" but still not normal. I am just not that knowledgeable about the entire head and block and that's why i'm asking you guys. haha
Blue smoke is oil burning so with the upgrades in air flow the ecu will richen up the car, computer corrects condition so a hondata ecu programmed to your upgrades could help or an engine management system to control spark timing and injector pwm..

do a leak down test. other than that it may be vavle seals or vavle guides. hope it not the rings. mine dose the same thing its not tha
Black residue around the exhaust tip can be unburned oil in the exhaust as well as running rich, if your burning oil on acceleration then its your rings that are going out normally and if its mostly on decel then its normally the guides and valves.. as for the rich problem, by burning oil and the CEL being on your PCM may think its running lean and is dumping more fuel into the engine thus running rich.. could also have something to do with your spark timing aswell..
just a cpl areas you could look into

It needs a tune, why is this so hard to understand.. The stock ecu tends to run REALLY rich...GF's gsr ecu has her pegged in the 10's at wot.
the black smoke has nothing to do with your oil consumption. you have 2 problems. your running rich as all SH** and your also losing oil. (burning or leaking). you need a tune to stop the black smoke, then if there is blue smoke (when the black smoke is theoretically gone) then you know your burning oil and its time for a leak down. good luck =]
needs a tune if u keep running it that way you will wash rings which u more than likely by now your rings are toast, do a fresh hone new rings and bearings, headgasket, valve stem seals while ur at it throw some head studs in her, go ahead once youve freshened it up get a chipped ecu decent exhaust and a nice tune
I'd be willing to bet valve stem seals, does it smoke more in the winter? My car does the exact same thing as yours and it's a combo of the valve stem seals and rings, I have 165k on my gsr and the sleeves are starting to egg shape out, it's cheaper to find another block imo which is why I'm building a b20v on the side. Also check for vaccum leaks and look at your plugs, that will give you a better idea of oil consumption and running rich.
