I spun a bearing at the track a few weeks ago and since the whole motor is apart I plan on sending the head out to RLZ for the street/strip head...

I have the Supertech valve train in it right now but everyone keeps telling me its no where near as good as Ferra and get rid of "that supertech junk"

I plan on reving out to about 9300 this year and want the best valves/ valve train. (I don't mind spending the extra cash for Ferra if need be)

My overall question is what would you all suggest for valve train?


My setup:

B16 head
Supertech valve train
Skunk 2 pro 1s
Golden eagle cam gears

Benson Sleeved 84mm block with LS crank
Manley I beam rods
CP pistions 9:7:1
ACL race bearings

This setup made over 700+

Lets hear all the pros n cons to both!

 

if you truly want the best you wouldnt be looking at either of those

why not get skunk2 pro series valvetrain to match?

 

supertech.
we destroyed a head using ferrea after a valve dropped using their full valve-train.
went back to supertech no issues since and this is making 1000whp+

 

were you guy using the 5000 series valves?

 

Havent really looked into the skunk 2 honestly. I will either be using supertech or ferra

FERREA VALVES....

Supertech springs and retainers are cool, but Ive seen (firsthand) WAY too many ST valves fail. If you search you'll see alot more ST valve failures as well. Everything CAN fail obviously... but form what Ive seen, Ill never put anything but a Ferrea in any head of mine.

Ive been running Ferrea valves and ST springs retainers for a good hot minute with no issues, I DO NOT trust ST valves. Nor do the other 5 people I alone kow that have had non interference related issues with them.

yeah my ferrea valves are holding up great. just make sure you dont get the ferrea 5000 series valves. the 6000 series is what i have

I was thinking Ferrea Comp. Valves and keeping my ST springs and retainers. Should I do +1 over or keep it the stock size? Only looking to make around 750whp

 

The 5000s are fine...The 6000s are finer. LOL


Im on Stock size Ferreas and JDM H22 cams. 750 wheel.

 

if you trying to save money buy a set of intake ferrea 6000 series valves and a set of exhaust ferrea comp plus valves i stay this because only the exhaust side of the comp plus valves have inconel in them a good place to order head parts is from luke at 4piston

 

(as of now) I think im going to do the Ferrea comp valves and keep my current supertech springs and retainers.

 

I'm not trying to intrude on his thread but I haven't heard the first person say crower valves. I'm guessing because they are junk? I've heard the crower head kit with cams, valves, dual springs, and retainers was the way to go for b16 head. That what I was planning on doing on my ls/v build!

 

Let's just say the Brian Crower has a bit left to be desired, that's why its not mentioned much. especially for turbocharged applications.

 

Well I am thinking boost so maybe I need to rethink crower.

im thinking about going ferrea valves too, my built k20 motor dropped a valve this friday at test and tune using supertech valves, only taking it to 9000. I'm super dissappointed right now, can i just buy the 6000 series valves and use the retainers from supertech

 

All manufacturers have high end and low end products. You need to be specific when comparing valves.

 

i dont know if you guys are or not but its a good idea to replace tha factory honda valve locks with better after market ones like manley or st....i really think alot of vt failures are do to this with after market retainers and stiffersprings. just picked up a b16 head with aftermarket springs and retainers. once i got it home and inspected it the vaive locks have actually pulled halfway down in the retainer. and when it pulls all the way through well we all know what happens then. the locks are a great 40 dollar investment

 

I agree with that statement but dont believe your retaining clips pulled through a retainer just sitting there. The clips sit deeper in some retainers than others.

 

i didnt inspect it closely when i picked it up just glanced. i assume it was a boosted head since thats what you see alot of failures on or high hp and rpm all motor cars. the rest of the locks on all other retainers set flush with the top of the retainer. no big deal tho im gona get tha st locks and crower cromoly steel retainers. i like the steel better. to me the mild weight savings in titanium isnt worth it as titanium has more of a tendancy to wear and should be inspected periodically

 

Both companies make decent products, it really just depends on your budget
