Default Transmission Differences?

I cant seem to find my answer, and trust me I've been searching ;P I was just wondering what the difference is between an s80 and y80 tranny? I first thought that s80 && y80 stood for GSR only, but apparently due to posts i've been reading there are LS s80/y80 ones aswell?

I also read somewhere that y80 is an older model and s80 an newer? So pretty much when youre able 2 decide, you should go for the s80 one prolly?

Hope someone can clear this up for me
Thanks

Without looking inside and without a VIN number, the only way you can tell is if you install it and drive it.

I think the point is you really can not go by S80 or Y80, you have to go from which car it came out of. Considering the S80 could be one of 4 different transmissions and the Y80 one of two different.

doesn't really matter what case says, crack it open and find out (count teeth and what not)..not to mention, honda tranny cases are really weak and internals get switched between cases often

link that doctorake posted above has tooth count on bottom of page

Lol man, why dont u understand my question? I dont want to find out whether i've got an S80 or Y80..

I just want to know the differences between each 2, example 1 of the 2 being an older/newer model

But anyone else has any thoughts on what Nicolai just wrote about honda tranny cases being really weak? :O

You do not understand the answer.

There is no difference, those mean nothing all that matters is what car it is out of.

Y80(94-95) is the early model tag code and S80(96-01) is the later model tag code.
