Default Weird noise on 91 HB base.

I just bought a 1991 honda civic HB base a few days ago and have been going through it and fixing things. I noticed today that there is a weird kind of whining noise coming from the timing belt side of the motor. The car has 172k miles and I have no idea what has or hasn't been replaced. Is it the water pump or something else? and what is the best water pump for the price? The radiator is also leaking, what brand of radiator is good for everyday driving?

I would pull off the cam gear cover and see if the belt is rubbing against anything. To do this you have to remove the valve cover first. Honestly there isn't anything wrong with Auto Zone parts. Almost everything has a lifetime warranty so if something were to happen, free replacement. I have used az tbelt/water pump and tensioner for years without problems. If you have the money, oem parts are always a good choice too.

Sounds like the timing belt is too tight. This will cause a supercharger-like whine.

It doesn't necessarily sound like a supercharger whine, more like a bad idler pulley noise or something similar. It's not constant. When I had the valve cover off yesterday to do the gasket, I took a gander at the cam gear + timing belt. The belt looked like it was in decent shape.

So you're saying a spectra radiator would do the trick for a stock 1.5? I don't plan on doing any serious mods to this car.

If you don't plan on doing any modifications to the car then like someone else in the comments said you can go with am Auto Zone radiator, if you're not looking to show the car and it's just your daily car then there isn't anything wrong with that.

Ok guys, spectra radiator it is, now there are two different models

-or-

The only difference I see is the core size. I also plan on replacing my passenger cv axle and rear passenger wheel bearing, can I also just get off the shelf brands on those as well? I'll be doing most of my shopping locally or rock auto. I also plan on doing the water pump, timing belt and cat back exhaust, any particular brands on the water pump and belt? I was looking on eBay at cheap cat back exhaust systems, this is the one I am interested in
