Default d16z6 replacement

Okay here is the deal. I have a 95 civic ex coupe. The motor is a d16z6. I had my woodriff key break or some god forsaken phenomenon happen where the harmonic balancer ate all the grooves off the spline on the crankshaft. (the balancer bolt was still tight as eff but moving on). So I either need to replace the crank or the motor. I thought just to replace the motor and be done with it......but, I cannot seem to find a d16z6 anywhere. Which leads me to ask what replacement motor should i get. I found a guy on craigslist selling jdm motors (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/pts/3287466881.html). I also need this to pass ca smog, so no check engine which I assume I need to use my head for the vtech harness if i go d15 etc. Also I have called around to see about getting the motor rebuilt and the cheapest quote i got was 1600. (noone will just replace the crank) which seems a little outrageous. any help would be much appreciated.

thanks, I have been on ebay and cl but most of the used engines from private parties are just as sketchy as the jdm, ive also gotten mixed reports on the jdm motors. Anywhere between 40-100,000. can anyone confirm that?

I would go to www.hmotorsonline.com and buy the d15 vtec motor. It is pretty much the same motor and should have like 30-40k on it. Drop it in and go.

It has to pass CA emissions people.
Keep searching for a D16Z6 there are places that sell them used, there is a place in Bakersfield and i think one in Fresno i believe.
Search Craigslist.

Ok so i have looked at all the suggestions and i think i have decided to buy the d15 vtech from hmotors.com. In the mean time i will get the d16z6 rebuilt for smog and sell the d15 motor when I'm done. but i have a few questions. Are the mounts, starter, belts etc.. the same? ecu and harness going to work without modifying ? and should i expect the check engine light?

I would get a 96-98 D16Y8 motor, and swap over your intake manifold, TB, VTEC valve cover, and distributor from the D16Z6.
