Default D series Trans Question

Ok so I'm pretty sure I have a bad input shaft bearing in my trans. So I want to buy my self a used trans from a junkyard or craigslist or something. And swap them out.

I have a 98 civic dx and I believe my transmission says s40 on it and if im not mistaken there are a few different trans for the d series. So do i just need to get another one that says s40 and i will have all the same gear ratios and it will fit?

Also is there any thing i can look for when buying a used trans? I know its kinda a crap shoot but if you have any tips let me know

thanks

Why not replace the ISB And seal and keep the old trans?

THE s40 means nothing, the code you want is by the passenger side of the diff.

If you're buying a used trans replace the ISB before you put it in. I'd say 8 out 10 will have a bad ISB.

It's really hard to tell a good transmission from a bad one without taking it completely apart. Even with the case off a lot of stuff isn't readily apparent. You really need to take the trans apart and clean everything up to truly see whats good and what isn't.
