2000 honda civic ex with b16 swap

Car also had a little to much oil don't know if that would cause this.


As I was driving, I hit vtec and almost redlined or redlined(for half a second) the car just suddenlu lost power(not completely) but car went to low rpm and could not accelerate. So I put my hazards and pulled over. And the car would not start, it would crank but not turn on. So after looking under the hood check oil levels etc the car woild not start, 10 mins later, I crank it and it almost starts then it does start! Motor seems to run fine, so I drive it home. The next morning I start the car perfectly normal and I drive it thinking its fine. I drive normal for about 10 mins then it suddenlyhsuddenly happens again, car lost power and was runnimg at super low rpm and couldnt accelerare then the car dies. This time I could not get it to start. It cranks but does not start.


Any idea on the problem? Bad alternator? Fuel pump?

 

Check all four plugs. Make sure the spark is bright whitish-blue. That's your first step in troubleshooting.

 

Like he said ^^^ make sure your getting spark and fuel. Check your grounds. Esp the one on the trans

 

ok ill check the sparks tomorrow.
also small amount of oil has been leakin onto the alternator. could this cause it to crank but not turn on?

 

Well it's definitely not good if the alternator brushes are fouled up with oil. They can't really conduct electricity very effectively that way.

 

I don't think it's that but you should clean it up

 

so just did a little more diagnosing.

battery is full recharged, checked fuses, did oil change(now has correct amount, not overfilled), changed spark plugs, did a compression test and got about 150psi(on ice cold engine, dont know if this is bad for cold engine?)

i do have new fuel pump+filter but not installed yet.

i did check for spark, and looks like i have NO spark. so i will work on that next. what are all the causes of no spark? spark plug wires, and ignition coils?

Could be cap and rotor or a bad dizz. Even old beat up plug wires will make a spark

Is there a way I can check/test specifically? If its rotor, cap, or coils? Or does autozone, o rieleys check if I bring the whole dizzy in?

I don't want to have to buy more than I have to

 

Idk because I've never had to replace one in 7 years of playing with these cars

 

take the cap off and look at the conduits in it, look for wear, corrosion. cracks anything ou the ordinary, but FIRST make sure you have power and ground and signal from the connector.

 

Or just take a plug out put it in the plug wire and crank the car and see if its sparking on the metal of the car. Do it to every one
