shifting from 1st to 3, and 3 to 5th...
hey Guys,
I've been driving my new 2k1 GS-R for about 3 weeks now. Dam thing is expensive on gas!! Coming from a Civic DX Hatch that is... I get about 410 KM a tank. I used to get around 600 on my civic.
I noticed, since the GS-R's have such a large RPM range, and the gears are pretty close, I can easily shift from 1 to 3, to 5. or start off in 2, then go to 4 then 5th.
The reason why I'm doing this is to save gas. I'm usually between 2 - 3k RPM.
My question is, would this harm the transmission? anyone else do this, or does anyone else have tips of saving gas?

try it! there is no hesitation at all, once you hit 3k from 1st, dropping it into 3rd is real smooth.... I'm thinking you save gas by shifting less, and less flucuation in the RPM's.... its more consistent.
if you are not going uphill, starting in 2nd feels so normal.... just dont hop the clutch, slowly let it go. once you hit 3k, pop it in 4th. no hesitation/shaking at all.
uhh....gas mileage is not dependant on what gear you are in, it depends on your throttle.....i mean obviously the car will accelerate better in a lower gear, but skipping a gear means most likely you will have to smash the gas harder to accelerate at the same rate as you would we a previous gear.

sometimes i get on it in first, second..then skip to 4th.....but yeah..your not gonna save gas. The only way to do that is if you keep it out of vtec..and shift at low rpm's.......did that once (soo hard to do) and came out w/ my best tank of gas ever in my gsr

you may be going at a lower RPM but you're putting in more gas (by pressing the throttle more) because you need that to get the power up from such a low RPM... you're not saving any.
No, you will save some gas.
On some GM cars (camaro, corvette) they have a 1-2 skip shift feature that forces you to go from first to third on low throttle upshifts. They put this in to help meet their corporate fuel economy requirements, and I doubt they would have implemented this if it didn't save some on gas.
I do first to third a fair amount. It's nice if I want to accelerate pretty quickly to 30, but then want to stay at that speed.

guys.... I know more throttle, more gas... however, the GSR tranny specifically, if you skip gears you can maintain the throttle where it was in the previous gear and go further without shifting.
PaChila leader mentioned GSR can get at least 470 KM per tank on 92 octane. Since I bought the car, I been using 94 octane and could not get more than 412KM a tank, driivng mostly below vtec range....
So my question is, the higher the octane in your gas, the less gas milage you get? someone please clear that up,
thanks.

But, man you have to be very disciplined and constantly concentrate to shift before 4400! I usually get ~27-29MPG anyway, so IMO it ain't worth it...
If your revvin the **** out of your car, 1-, you won't be saving any gas, 2- you can shift to any gear you like after you hit redline and of course if you skip one or even two if you want once you're in the powerband, i highly reccommend shifting through the gears even if your not gonna use 2 or 4 or 3rd and 5th, but just be easy on the tranny don't lurch it from one gear to the next. the sycros ring gear will like you better for it.

I hit 490km's on a tank once but that was pure highway driving. I usually dont get more than 420km's in city driving. oh, and i don't think skipping gears is going to help you either.
YAAAAAAAAAAAA...... try getting 5 MPG driving a 69 Chevelle 427 BigBlock, i know its not a honda, but stop complaining....geezzzzz, i r
ally the **** out of my little old D15 and i still get 32 mpg. I get 8mpg maaaayyybe on the freeway. The only thing you are gonna do is make your sincros work harder to spin up the tranny, its not bad now but keep doin it and it might later down the road, and your clutch will feel nice and gushy after a while launchin' in second, thats my two cents?......................

I totally agree....anyways with half city and half highway...mostly stop and go traffic...I get 500+ km on a 98 gsr....with some driving in vtec...which is very good....so i think you should get a tune up or something!....otherwise shifting like you do cant be good for the synchros..

1. do a tune-up.. fuel filter, oil filter, oil, gasket if you like.. compr test
2. this is a very easy way to do man..
Go get a LS 5 speed ecu that matchs the model of you car.. say.. if you are OBD2 then get OBD2, if you are OBD2V2 get OBD2v2.. like that..
and your car will run without Vtec like an LS.. so don't do that 2nd, 4th 5th bullsh!t..
PS. Besides how much gas are you really saving, huh? like what? 20KM more
A dollar Canadian = 10 KM = 1.XX L
if you can't spend that extra 2 bux for your gas...
why don't you just sell your car... I have friends are looking for one in ON.
Does it affect the gas mileage that much if you hit vtec, i mean honestly how often do you guys hit vtec in a daily or weekly time period. Is it bad to a certain extent?....I obviously know there is extra stress on your engine but how often should you hit the vtec....
second gear starts? BAD BAD BAD, this requires A) more slippage of the clutch will end up costing you more to replace in the long run then that extra money on gas. B) extra stress on the engine and the synchro bearings to keep up...this will also cost you big $$ down the road if you have problems...unless of course it goes under warrenty, then it is big $$ for honda
