How much axle play is normal?
My car started making a clunk noise
It seems more pronounced from the driver side
I pulled the wheels off and pulled on everything. No noise
It only makes noise on the road.
Only things I found that could cause it was the outer tie rod (which I will be replacing tomorrow). The tie rod makes no noise but is the original piece and not as good as the new passenger side one I installed.
The axle shifts about 1/2 inch at the cv joint near the hub but nothing at the cv joint near the tranny
It shifts along this line I've drawn here:

This axle is 3 years old, a reman unit
The passenger side one shifts as well but only 1/8 inch it seems. Still the original one
I checked today and the axle is still under warranty so it be no big cost to fix
Also, could an off alignment be off

Don't think this is normal. What do you guys think?

I'm having the same problem, my axles have a lot of play. I got an alignment done, thinking it would help But clunking noise is still there. Could it be that the axles are bad? Have an 88 civic dx hatch. Ive had the car for about a year now. If I was to replace them, would I have to get 26 spline axles?
The bearings can safely travel the entire length of the cup. Quite a bit more than 1/8" as stated in a previous post.

Your suspension does a decent job at limiting the bearing movment in and out of the cup.
If you lowered your car, the bearings are pressed further into the cup. This can cause an issue of bottoming the bearing out in the cup and creating binding and wear issues in the wheel bearing and differential.
Take a read of the three pages in this article.

yeah, your axles should not have that much play in them. I would replace the driver side. When I brought mine back into autozone, they lookeded at it and didn't see a leak and wanted to know what was wrong with it. I stood it up lengthwise and shook it up and down and you could hear it clunk on the other portion...they gladly replaced it.
