Rough Idle at Startup
Hey guys, could ignition timing being off cause a rough idle at startup? I was told by a shop that it sounded like timing was off when listening to my exhaust. After a few minuted it evens out, but still seems a bit unstable. Iacv and throttle body is clean. Head was pulled, milled, and has a new head gasket set. Timing belt is perfect, but I feel that distributor is off a bit. Also, car is 88 crx si, d16a6 all original exceor ngk plugs and wires.

Does the idle go up then down, up then down? I had that problem after the car warmed up. I know this is kinda opposite of your issue but, it did it because my throttle cable was too tight and the butterfly plate stayed shut. Now leading to my point, there's a coolant line to keep the throttle plate from freezing, lol freezing going into fall. Check the butterfly, could be stuck somehow.
turn on car
get it to op temp
look at your throttle body from your driver side
there should be a flat head screw at the top of it.
free the screw and turn it left until you like the idle.
set your dizzy right at the middle

in rpm
screw it in too much and it will whistle slightly
theyre all the same direction..... im just slightly buzzed... did that help it out or no?
this screw controls the amount of air flowing through the idle air control valve hole.
the more closed it is the louder the whistle

The screw is to adjust idle, just leave it.
Was this a problem that happened overnight? Has it been happening since you've done something? Is it only all of a sudden?

Well I may have found the issue. Throttle stop screw was messed with. A friend thought thay was how to adjust my idle because that is how he adjusts his. So I will have to adjust that back to spec the best I can. Or I may replace throttle body since it came preset from factory and is non adjustable.
Bump again. No matter how I adjust anything, it still idles rough at startup when warm. Also, the idle drops low and comes back up when I let off the gas. it holds idle fine when it's just sitting there, just rough when started for a minute or two. I really could use the help guys, I gotta get this thing to idle right. Any suggestions? Planning on replacing fuel filter also.
Valid point. Sorry i have been using my phone and didn't see your questions. It has always been like this. I bought the car with a blown head gasket. Pulled head, sent to machine shop, Fel-pro gasket set, timing is perfect, only thing I haven't touched ever is the valve clearance. Even after I pulled the head I never touched it cuz at the time I didn't know how. Also, I don't know the correct stopping point for throttle plate. I had it where is was as closed as possible without sticking, but then I upped it a hair cuz of the idle dropping too low when pedal was released.
