Default cylinder question on k20

noob question sorry couldn't find the answer anywhere. Which cylinder is number 1 in a k20 motor? I was told the one closest to timing belt but the k20 sits the other way around

it doesn't matter which way the engine sits you said it correctly, the cylinder closest to the timing belt/chain.

I typically say cyl. #1 is always the cylinder farthest away from the transmission. That way we could be talking about a Subaru or small block Chevy and still be correct.
