Default What type of oil are you using?

Full synthetic? Synthetic blend? What weight? My type R motor has a recently rebuilt top, but don't know what type of oil was used before. Any advice?

I use Valvoline 5w-30 full synthetic.
I have never had an oil pressure issue.

something with a lot of zinc/phos. mobil1 high mileage, redline, amsoil zrod, brad penn, royal purple

ALL the sm/sn 30w store syns are zinc limited to 800ppm. that means regular mobil1, valvoline syn, amsoil OE, penz plat and castrol syn varieties may all have different base stocks but they don't have as good of anti wear pack as either real race oils or some of oils marketed as high mileage

I've used Castrol GTX 5w-30 synthetic because it was on sale. Then I switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic because it was on sale. I considered Rotella due to the zinc content in it but finding a diesel oil in 5w-30 isn't so easy. I only see 5w-40 which for a forged race motor might be fine, but I think it might be too thick for street driving. I think it's more about maintenance than the kind of oil. Every 5,000 miles or 8,000 kilometers I change the oil (always synthetic) and the filter (always HAMP synergy). Toyo Roki filters FTW!

mobil1 high mileage is your best bet for lower cost syns. it has about 25% more zinc/phos than what you're using

Could oil cause smoke under acceleration? It didn't smoke before the head was rebuilt, but not smokes under heavy acceleration. I used Mobile 1 full syn... Could that cause smoke?

Is that the only difference?

between regular mobi1 and high mile? i know the additive pack is better in the high mile. mobil also claims the high mileage is better at resisting burning and maintains a better film in worn engines.

only actual fact i'm aware of is the zinc and phosphorus being 20-25% higher. this is also why mobil1 high mileage is not an sm/sn oil approved for new cars. the higher zinc is harder on cats

Amsoil 5w30 for the low mileage track caR motor. (Best of best)
Castrol Syntec 0w30 Euro formula for the DD ITR and winter Integra GS. (Amazing bang for buck)

BITOG is your friend.
