Default strange noise when turning

my crv makes a weird almost howling like noise when you make a tight turn going slow. it almost sounds like its coming from the rear. is it something to do with awd?

Check the U joints going from front to rear, notorious for breaking and making noise, requiring a new shaft, they are not serviceable except by a drive shaft specialist that can get the bearing caps.

Could also be shudder from the rear differential.

When's the last time you changed your rear diff fluid. That should be done about every 30,000 miles. If it's been longer than that, my money is on your differential clunking.

Very common issue in the Element world that's usually remedied with a diff fluid change. When you change it, make sure to open the FILL bolt first. Because if for some reason you drain the diff first and later find out that your filler bolt is seized and you can't open it, you're hosed. Same thing goes for tranny fluid changes.

Not sure what all you need to do the diff fluid on the V, but in the Element your best bet is to use a PVC hose, run that from the filler hole up passed the rear tire with a funnel hook to it. Fill it up until fluid comes out the filler hole.

Get you diff fluid from the dealer. How much? Not sure. I have to do mine in the E when it finally gets here off the boat.

Here's a link to a thread on how to do it on the Element. I imagine that the one for the CRV isn't too much different.

Check your boots to see if they're out, or if they're leaking any grease.

You sure about that? There was a post on here, I think a link to Honda SUV.com where someone changed the U-Joints out themselves.

On a CRV? I doubt it, the caps are crimped, and they are very small, a shop that specializes in this service may manufacture caps to fit, but I tried to press some out of a broken driveshaft and it snapped the ears off.

Thats good to know, We just send those out when they come in, and we get a balanced replacement turned around. I've never been able to source them myself as I have said, but driveshaft shops found them somehow.

What a coincidence, we get our driveshafts from them lol.

I work a a dealership in Pittsburgh, and this is the most common issue with the CR-Vs. Get yourself a 3/8" ratchet and 2 qts of dual pump fluid from your dealer. and do a drain and fill on the rear diff. Depending on how bad it is you may need to barnish the diff. To do that drive it around to get the diff up to temp. and drain and fill it. then drive it around some more then do another drain and fill. PROBLEM SOLVED. Works everytime man.

Which fluid do you use? The manual says to use CVT fluid in the rear diff...

Mine would squeak while doing tight turns.

like

SQUEEEEEEEE SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!

After I changed the rear diff the sound went away, I was driving around in full lock circles in my neighborhood, neighbors stared at me like I was drunk.

The same way I stare at them and laugh at them when I see them put blankets on their bushes when it drops to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Heaven forbid their bushes and flowers might catch a cold!

Texans.......

But as everyone has said, I just picked up some dual pump II fluid from the stealership. Not sure what CVT fluid its talking about, the only CVT I know of is Continuous Variable Transmissions.

Make sure to get a hand pump to get the fluid into the tranny, unless you're handy at routing a rubber hosey and use gravity. I did not, I bought a hand pump for like five bux at a local auto shop.

I think you need a new crush washer. Meh I can't remember.

I had the same problem on my AWD Element. When I turn slowly, I could hear a vibrating/howling sound. I researched about similar cases on other forums, and it turned out to be rear differential fluid. I did exactly what DeanHondaPGH described and problem solved. From what I read, I think it's important to use Honda dual pump fluid.

+1 for buying a cheap pump and using dual-pump fluid.

Anybody heard of the diff inside of a FWD doing the same thing as the rear diff in an AWD? Listening to posts sounds exactly like what people are saying is the old fluid problem in the rear diffs but mine is a FWD. Only does it when turning from stop or slow speem, both directions but a little more when turning to the right. I changed the trans fluid. It got worse right after, went away after warming up and driving in a bunch of circles. Came back a bit next morning and then mostly went away after driving with a bunch of turns.

it has over 200k miles and I just bought it for $3k. It didn't make that noise when I test drove it but showed up within a couple days. Anybody have any experience with this?

Probably needs the rear diff oil changing. Remember to only use the genuine Honda duel pump oil.
