p30 ecu problems and questions
My sister-in-law has a 1994 Del Sol w\vtec
Her car stopped running out of nowhere and upon investigating, found out that the c14 capacitor on the ecu looks like it leaked and blew out. (a common problem with age from what i've been able to research)
She has p30 ecu, so I wanted to get a replacement and found a few on ebay.
I noticed that some people mark them with the type of transmission the car has. Is this important?
Also, whats the difference in running a p28 vs the p30? In doing research, some people said that vtec wouldn't kick in, or that it would only rev to 7k, etc. Others said it would "work fine"
her car is completely stock.
Thanks in advance!

By "type of transmision" do they mean a manual with LSD vs. a manual without LSD or just different gearing? I'm just asking.
I know with the del sol si with D16Z6s there is a difference between the manual and auto ECUs. They're both P28s but different versions.
I also have a 94 del sol vtec converted to a LS/Vtec with a Type R head.
I can run it on the original P30 ECU or another P28 I have with a basemap.
I haven't had a custom tune done on the car but right now I think I like the original P30 performance better.

OP the ideal ECU for her car is a USDM P30 which are scarce and usually expensive.
A JDM P30 will work just fine as long as emissions testing isn't an issue in your area. I believe there where Civics/Del Sols in Japan with the B16 and auto transmissions, so make sure you get one for a manual.
The P28 you see all over ebay are not ideal for this engine (unless otherwise noted). Fuel maps, rpm range etc are different, and the ECU internals will need to be modified to work properly.

I think that's what EG8_CRUSADER^^ meant.
There's 3 usdm P30s on ebay for under $300 right now or you can try to source one locally which doesn't happen very often. if that cost it to high you can usually get chipped p28's with a p30 base map for around 170 from many places online

Thanks for the info guys, very very helpful. Yeah Im on a couple p30's now on ebay, one specifically for an MT.
There is a guy on here selling one in another thread for $175 as well
is replacing the c14 capacitor hard? I have basic soldering skills and tools, and found the replacement capacitor online for ~ $2. Would you recommend getting a stock p30 and replacing the C14? It seems the average life is around 15 years and thats pretty much now for any obd1 p30 out there...
Anything I need to know when performing the replacement?

I didn't trust my own skills and I think they charged me $20 to solder a couple of items. I think they looked over the whole board too and that was probably worth it to me.
