just did a used transmission swap due to no shift after second gear and no reverse. the first attempt, the transmission shaft didn't align with the torque converter so it locked up. the second time everythimg shifted ok on the test drive all the way to 60mph. after pulling into reverse, a grinding noise came on (at the rate of the engine rev) with no movement on all gears. from time to time, the car will move a few feet when it catches gear then slips again to grinding noise. no noise on parking but the car can still roll. transmission level is good with supertech ATF.
Something gave out in the transmission or torque converter. You will need another used one or you can go with a reman trans for a little more. Make sure you flush the cooler and install an external inline filter to prevent any contamination when you change it again.
The converter goes on the input shaft and stays there during assembly, you do not install the converter on the flex plate and then put the trans in, its much harder to do, and you risk severe damage to the flex plate.
If the car rolls in park and the linkage is indeed in park, you probably broke an axle, given the vehicle moves a few feet from time to time. Broken park pawl is possible but if it stayed in park before and now it doesn't, provided you didn't slam it in park while it was moving, its not very likely, but possible.
Place the gear selector in drive and put one foot on the brake, and the other on the gas slowly, have an assistant check to see if a driveshaft turns or is out of place. Really good to have it on jackstands for clarity.
