95 EX cuts out when warm
I have a 95 Civic EX 5 speed with D16Z6.
OK my car cuts out after it is warm on a warm day. example, Once I am on the highway and miles down the road when completely warm the car will lose complete engine power loss, within a second or two (sometimes up to 5 seconds) the car with get full power back all at once. No lights come on so Its not electrical problem. I thought it was a problem with the fuel pump or pick-up in the tank because the tank and sheild are dented, only happened when at half tank. Today it occured with almost full tank.
Any thoughts
I have searched but can only find pages of the car shutting down.

Its not the main relay. Cleaned old one up---same problem. put another one in from a car that did not have issues----same problem.
Not O2 sensor---unplugged it, got CEL light, but same problem.
I did figure out that when it is cycling "power" on off , if I turn the car completely off, wait a minute then start back up, I can get about a mile before it starts cycling again. It starts out mild like its missing. but then complete loss of power about 2 seconds then 1 second power, 2 second loss, 1 second power, etc
Does not die or turn lights on. Has to be a sensor but not sure witch.

ok, I pulled the fuel pump cover off from under the rear seat. I wired a meter inline and went for a drive. During the surge there volatge went up about 1.5 vDC (11.5vDC driving ---12.5 to 13vDC at loss of power). So pump is not shutting off.
When I pulled over I could hear the pump sucking air, about the same duration the surge would occur. Car has also been idling like missing but was mild enough to deal with, although running rich, could smell exhaust. But was getting 37mpg so f... the smell.
Pulled the pump out and found the filter and pump covered in rusty/dirty cake. So going to pull a tank and pump from my nephew's wrecked 2000. Think it fits, doing search now.

Well the 2000 tank has a different design on the top rear and more vent/sensors, also the fill vent is mixed into that and not in same location.
So cleaned my tank. The dent did not affect the pump operation and only takes up about a gallon space so I can live with that.
While cleaning I found about half a sheet of a shop towel. That combined with a nasty pre pump filter would have caused the sucking air into the line. Determined by the flow design inside the tank.
Now to reinstall tank and test.

Has been running fine since saturday. So a dirty fuel pump stock and a shop towel in the tank.
For anyone with this problem, check you pump. Its easy to remove.
