Default 2006 Honda CRV coughing and sputtering

I have a 2006 Honda CRV. It has about 145k on it. It has begun coughing and sputtering when under any load at all, accelerating, going up hills, etc. but it runs fine at steady load. I am getting an occasional sulfur smell. Last night the Check Engine light came on and stayed on. This morning it was off but them came back on. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Fred

well then. you have the problem cylinder id'd. time to dig further.
pull the spark plug and have a look at it. HEI test the coil. check for injector pulse. check compression. those are what i'd do
