Im very confused at this point with all the research I've been doing. I recently bought a 91 civic STD hb. Seems they swapped out original motor. Block stamp is d15b. The head is definetly the carb version. Well I'll be swapping the head out soon since I have access to a y8 head. Now I'm considering a mild build on block, but can't find any credible information. When I research d series engine specs, yes the jdm d15b is there, but only as vtec.... Wtf! Tell me I have the jdm d15b vtec minus the vtec head, lol yeah right!

If the block is stamped with just d15b and not like d15b2 (original motor) the block is from a D15B VTEC. USDM motors have a number after the last letter, i.e D16a6, D16z6 etc. If you look on the head by the cam (if I recall correctly) should be a stamp like PM3-xx. This will tell you which head it is. Here is the link to most of the Head Codes:

People get lazy when putting a new engine in, rather than convert the car to MPFI, they put a different motor in with the stock DPFI intake manifold so everything just plugs in.
I would find out 100% what you have first, rather than guessing. Most if not all D series have the same block specs though, same bore etc. Just check, better safe than sorry.

The head has a block off plate behind cyl4 near the tb which leads me to believe it's the carbuerated d15b out of like a 1g or 2g crx. Did that block share the same code as the d15b vtec? If so, are they identical? I don't think this person I got the car from would be that lucky to piece a motor up n just have a d15b vtec block.... N junk the head lol.

K bro, thx dephnote! So my main question is if I want to work on block, do I use crank, rods, pistons that would fit the z6 or b2?
It does not matter, they are the same bore/stroke etc.
Realistically you won't need to change out the crank unless for some reason it cannot be used again i.e due to rod bearing failure and it cannot be turned down anymore.

24 if that was wrong info, can u plz give right info. I wasn't convinced that the info was on point, as u see I still have questions but dephnote at least tried n I was thankful. As the noob that 1st posted.... Lol nevermind
When i salvages parts i tried to stay with the engine size first off d15 goes with d15 as d16 go with d16. See? As for the y8 head, personally i wouldn't use it. Dizzys are hard to find with them and theyre a pain of a motor if something breaks cause no one seems to know a lot of that motor. Z6 is best bet. Autozone/orealy's/advanced don't carry the RIGHT parts for y8's.
trust me I'm putting in a y8 engine where a y5 use to be and i tried 6 dizzys and none of them fit the head or they're not the correct obd plug...

Haha, I'm not salvaging any parts here. I just wanna know if I buy aftermarket rods/pistons, bearings, or h2o pump, do I buy it for a d15b2 or d16z6. Only reason why I reference z6 is cuz it's like zc sohc vtec or jdm d15b vtec.
Online somewhere it says that the d15b7 dizzy bolts right up to the y8 head, well I just replaced my head gasket and my carb head was trashed so my friend lenses me his refreshed b7 head and my dpfi dizzy bolts up perfect.

Thx jlicrx. That was very informative.... Well guys, my questions are answered. It appears that the pistons are interchangeable and when I do those I can see what rods match up to.
