Default 1997 Civic HX Stalls when stopping

So I found some similar threads but unlike the other ones my car is able to start up immediately after stalling but will want to die again unless I rev it up a bit. This usually happens when I'm rolling in neutral coming to a stop my car will just die on me. When I press on the brake I can feel it "chugging" and wanting to die. What could be some contributing factors to this? I've read ICM, IACV, TB, and vacuum leaks which I believe I have a slight one on my brake. Also, a friend said that it could be my fuel filter? Because when I cleaned my EGR he said that gas should have poured out of it but none did. Please help. I'm starting to develop a great deal of hate towards cars. Thank you.

Did you do any of those cleaning/replacing that you read on other threads yet or did you just come here to make us chase wild goose again like the other guy?

Just a bit of a wild goose chase. I just wanted to get input since there are a some differences between my situation to see if there were any other solutions besides the ones I posted.

Describe how you cleaned the EGR.

Also, I don't think he has done anything else. That's what I get from reading his posts. Maybe that's why no one has tried to answer his question yet. There's no detail in what he has done so far.

OP. Do the things you read first. Also provide detail results and problems.

How long has it been since the car has had a tune up? Start off with easy stuff first, clean your IACV. More than likely that is it. How did you clean your EGR? If i'm not mistaken the HX has an entire little plate you need to take off and clean.

Was it doing this before you cleaned your EGR?

Put new plugs in it, new air filter, new fuel filter. Not sure what you're friend is talking about having gas pour out of your EGR, I've never had gas come out of all the ones I've cleaned.

Go ahead and replace the fuel filter and also clean out the egr chamber and the egr valve itself. From what I've seen the egr needs a good cleaning about every 100k-115k miles. I've had problems with both my 97 & 99 civics. The 99 I had it all cleaned out along with new timing belt, water pump, and a lot of other stuff because I wanted to be able to easily go another 150k-200k miles without having too much trouble. I think that I maybe put 7k-8k miles before I started throwing codes for the egr. There are actually two different codes for egr, one for the valve itself and the other for insufficient flow.

I cleaned out the valve and chamber and the chamber was still good and didn't really need to be cleaned but was good experience getting in and doing it. I didn't go very far before the cel came on again for the egr valve which by then I had just started throwing codes on the 97 for egr so then I cleaned the one from the 97 and swapped it over and it's been fine ever since. I've since purchased a new valve from Majestic to go back on the 97 which the ports were completely blocked on that one.

Buying a new valve was really one of the last things I wanted to do as I had tried cleaning it twice but the same codes kept coming back. So with the 99 I attribute my problems to a sticking egr valve.

Here are some things that I recommend to clean the egr ports with:

gun cleaning brush in .22 cal and a handle for it
old toothbrush or nylon bristle brush
sea foam - that comes in the spray can
rubber/latex gloves

mrspeedy69: The car had a tune up when I bought it. And that was about 2,000 miles ago. I cleaned out the EGR valve and the plate by scraping/brushing and using throttle body cleaner. I didn't have the problem beforehand but I can't see how they could be connected. I have no idea what it's called but it's this small thing on that sits above the fuel rail. He said gas should have came out of that when I pulled it off. But I'm going to clean the IACV and see if that helps. Thanks for your input.

Kista20: The code it was saying was insufficient flow. I've cleaned the EGR and the plate. I'll replace the fuel filter as well. Thanks for your help.

To add some more information this usually happens on short drives. I drove it less than a mile yesterday for food and while sitting at the drive thru the car was running really rough to the point of nearly dying. The battery light would blink on and off. And revving it up didn't help because it would just bog back down to nearly dying. I don't know. I ordered parts and I'm going to try your suggestions today. Thanks for the help.

Well I thought I fixed the problem by cleaning the IACV, replacing the fuel filter, no vacuum leaks and the distributor cap and rotor were still fine but unfortunately after a couple weeks it happened to me again and this time it didn't start up right away but I was rolling enough to pop the clutch to start it back up. So I'll be trying to check and try some other things out like cleaning my throttle body and the idle.
