What is the EPA milage on the 1996-2000 Honda Civic HX? I've been getting around 34-37 miles per gallon on mostly freeway miles (I travel 65 miles round trip per day, most of which are on the highway).

I read that that this year HX is supposed to be like 36-42mpg or something?

I also have another unrelated question. I recently read that the HX has a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which is pretty neat. Is that the reason why the transmission makes a whining noise when put in reverse? Or is that only mine? lol

I have a 1997 Civic HX with 172,000 miles and counting.

Oh one more thing, what measures can I take to optimize my fuel milage? I know air filter is important. Also spark plugs. What else? I think my Civic has an exhaust leak somewhere.. it's kinda loud when I accelerate. Also, air filter looks like it's pretty clean. I'll probably do a tune up this weekend so let me know what I should replace! BTW maintenance record is unknown (I just bought the car, and the last owner doesn't know a thing about the car).

Wow that's pretty crappy lol

My sister's 1998 DX w/ 250,000 miles gets around 31mpg.

When she had a ghetto OBX intake, she got around 27. Took it off and installed a stock airbox w/ new filter and bam, an instant 4mpg gain!

Oh 1 other Q.. I test drove a manual 1996 HX, and it had a shift light. Are tehse only found on HXs?

manual 35-37 mpg, running @ 73000 miles.

I have a D16Y7 in my 96 Civic, 112k miles. I got short ram intake, d16Y8 IM, iridium plugs, and a M/T and get 34mpg at least. I want to put on the y5 head. If i get that head on soon, I'll let you know if it helps.

Replace plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, check O2s (or just replace if they are original). I'd search for the exhaust leak since it could fool your ecu into thinking you are running lean/rich depending on where it is..

Holy ****, you guys get crappy gas mileage. I have a boosted y7 with a y8 transmission and I still get between 35 and 39 mpg.

i get 33 from my ex...and i got 260k... kind of odd.

I have a 95 civic vx and I know that my car says it gets 44-51 mpg but only if I have the correct tires on it which are hard to find and have low rolling resistance. You should check out your tires because it can make a 10mpg difference in my model

I get like around 43 mpg last time I checked at 185000 miles

99 hx 179,000 miles; AEM CAI, bad primary o2 sensor.

ok whew.. so i'm about average then. I thought mine was low, but it's about the same as you guys.

Gonna tune it up and see what results I get. I'll also check on that exhaust leak

What I do is:

Fill up the tank til it's full. Do not top off.
Reset the trip meter
Drive about 300-370 miles or so.
Fill up the tank again at the same gas station and same pump, do not top off.

Take the miles you travelled on your trip meter and divide by the gallons you filled up. That's your mpg!

boy.. you guys with hx's be gettin bad mileage. my dx gets 38 mpg constantly, and 40-42 if i drive like a granny and never floor it.
