Humming when off throttle
I'm stumped I just got my car together and tuned and it started making a humming sound when I was off the throttle. So I thought it was the axles but I go to take the wheel off and I was missing a lug nut so I get another one and tighten them all back down and that seemed to fix the problem. So I drove the car for close to 60 miles yesterday and I was about 3 miles from home so I was thinking of getting on it from a stand still, didn't dump the clutch just floored it in first and went though 1-3 and got back off of it. Then once I did this the noise came back so I've got no idea except maybe the diff is going bad?
Sounds suspension related -possibly. The only difference between throttle and no throttle is when throttling, youre loading up the drivetrain, causing it to point as straight as it wants to be, without a load, the wheels are free to point in whatever direction they want. It may be out of alignment causing wheel scrub from toe out, or tires may be cupped or knotchy. Are the yokohamas by any chance? Did you do the tie rods recently?
its the axles, jacked the car up and noticed grease all over the inside of my engine bay I just cleaned when the motor was out, already ordered some axles but this is going to be a pain in the *** to clean, then I shall be down to see you because this car is a never ending car story.
At least you found it! Yah, a good rule of thumb is if the car makes noise while off throttle, but not on, its something either attached to the wheels or the tires or wheels themselves. Has to do with loading up the srivetrain/suspension and when theres no load.
Humming when off throttle is typically gear abrasion on the coast side of gear teeth or bearing failure. If this is in any gear, it's likely your final drive. Could have been caused by someone mixing used gears, or poor lubrication/maintenance.
