2000 GSR Key problem.
So I just bought a GSR last month and the owner gave me one key only. I decided to go make copies because I didn't want to be screwed if I lost my only key or locked it in my car. I went to the local Home Depot to make myself 2 copies and it turns out the keys doesn't work. They can open my car but the ignition won't start and all you hear is the starter going but it won't start. Does this have to do with the new 2000 models that have built in kill switch? I'm guessing there's a chip inside the only key I have and that's why it works? Do I have to go make one at the dealership if I want extras? Do you know how long the process takes and how much it'll cost? Thanks for taking time to read this. P.S. I'm car illiterate so bare with me.
Do you know how long it will take to be made and how much it'll cost? I found some "genuine uncut Honda keys" on ebay, would those work if I just ordered them and bring them to a locksmith to cut them for me?
The cutting is easy; the programming is a bit harder, but only in a "chicken dance" sort of way. I have a Honda PDF somewhere on how to do the "chicken dance" so your immobilizer ECU will accept and recognize your new key. If you want it, I'll look for it, but you're better off to let the locksmith do the whole shot.
Provided the seller can guarantee you that his "uncut" keys are FULLY compatible with your specific version of the Honda immobilizer, then yes. Locksmiths discovered long ago that people don't want to pay dealer prices for new keys, so they piled into the business themselves.

Just bring your title to the dealership and they'll cut you a key based off the VIN. Real easy to do, and it shouldn't be more than 20 bucks. Works like a champ every time.

The part number is 35118-SY8-A03 and its $20.67 and program is $60 or my dealer has a t5 key and its only $29.95 and there is no programming for those bc they have a machine that transfers the code from your key to the new one, but not all dealers have those
hey. i had this exact same problem. i bought a 00 integra 4dr and only got one oem key as well. had a buddy who worked at the Honda dealership to get me keys cut. had it done and it did the exact same thing as your keys.
the newer integra's have a built in chip that needs to be programmed by Acura. getting the keys cut is fairly cheap and if you want each key programmed, that's where they get you.
go to an Acura dealership and they will do everything for you.
the cost here is $20 per key and $75 for programming. but that's in Canadian currency.

Just did this on a 2000 odessy local dealer told me $75 for them to make 1 new key for the car that was key blank cut and programed.
the Code copy method is called Key clonning and is a Bad idea. the cloned keys can be read from a longer range the programed OEM keys and a simple $20 kit bought online can read clone keys up to 15 feet away on any Android or iOS device.
also Cloned keys can get ereased but common every day electronics redering them blank and non functioning.
if you don't want to worry about have chipped keys you can get a imobolizer bybass kit used when installing remote start and have it wired into the system and it will use your OEM key for the chip and alow you to start the car with the 2 new keys you have.

Well, according to most people in here it's close to $100. :/ So it's unavoidable I suppose. I'm just going to make another copy for my folks cause I don't want to lose my keys and be hopeless or have to break my own window and steal my own car. :/
Yeah, it's pretty hard to lose keys but I need another copy just in case ya'know? My mom had 2 keys for her Toyota Camery and she's lucky she did cause one time when we went fishing, my sister had the keys in her pants and she went on a paddle boat then dropped it while paddling. Had to drive 1 hour back home(in another car, luckily we took 3 cars or we would've been stranded there cause there was no cell phone service up in the lake we went to) to get the copy of the key and go back then drive it home, by that time it was already 11pm. The Camery had a alarm too but only one of the alarm pager and that was on the key, so now whenever the Camery door is opened, we have to start the car right away or the alarm will go off and it has a kill switch to it so it won't start even with the copied key. What a hassle, I hope I never get to go through that.
