Do i only need a usb to obd2 connecter and software to be able to run tests on my car through my laptop? What exactly do i need and can anyone recommend a good software package?

 

That should be all you need. I'm guessing an eBay/Chinese special?

If it's an authentic ScanTool, their software is supposed to be amazing.

Otherwise, some good free ones are wOBD and easyOBD. Both have limitations and aren't full featured unless you pay, but they're great for pulling codes.
