Walbro 255 SCREAMS

Some of you might remember my issue when I first picked up my 92 GSR. Car would start up, drive about a block....then die. Then it would just crank and crank and not start until cold again.
Well I finally figured out the fuel pump was shot so I replaced it with a Walbro 255 kit. Car runs and drives great now, HOWEVER......when it's hot out the car takes forever to crank over. If it's cold out, no problem she fires right up.
Also, when the car hits about half a tank the pump starts getting really whiny, and if I let her get to 1/3 of a tank the ****ing thing SCREAMS when I come to a stop....and only when I stop. While driving she sounds normal.
Any ideas?
I do have a feeling the old strainer is floating in the gas tank because when I pulled the old pump it did not have the extension tube with basket on the end. Could this be getting stuck onto the new unit when fuel starts getting low?
I also can hear electrical surging from the pump if say....I turn on a turn signal. The pump can be heard surging to the rhythm of the turn signals. Same with brake lights. If I hit the brakes I can hear an audible dip in the fuel pump.
It gets embarassing as **** driving anywhere with 1/2 a tank or less. I've been keeping her full just to avoid it altogether for now.

Anybody?
Yesterday I came out of work and it started up, died....then took 15 minutes to start up again.
The pump wasn't priming, car just cranked and cranked.
I had an extra main relay in my office, swapped that in..same thing.
Finally after sitting there stumped for a few minutes it fired up like nothing was wrong.

Definitely possible: it's an aftermarket pump.
However, you did say there was some question about the installation of the sock filter and its tube. If it were me, I'd drop the tank and check that out first. This just may have some connection with the noise.
And once the tank was out, I'd use an angle-grinder to cut a hole in the body where the pump is, so as to make future pump work a LOT easier!

sounds like install error. pump height may be off which is why it's weird as the gas level goes down. walbro is an oem quality piece, they have been making fuel pumps for quite some time. it's possible that you just have a bad one but rare.

One of my Walbro's went out in about 3 months. It was also loud as hell. Maybe it was a knockoff, who knows. My current Walbro has lasted years and isn't much louder than stock. Definitely doesn't scream.

I would hope InlineFour didn't send me a knockoff....but when I have time I'll drop the tank and check out the installation. I didn't do the install on this one. I had previously installed an AutoZone universal pump myself and it didn't solve my problem.....so on a hunch I ordered the Walbro and had a shop drop it in. It DID fix my real problem of the car just shutting off while driving, but now I deal with this whine/screech when gas level drops.
You need to inspect the inside of the tank. If it's rusted and flaking off, that can cause what you are dealing with. The fuel pump sock could also be clogged as well. The pump will then scream when it doesn't get the fuel needed. You could also have just got a bad pump.

this what i would do too. screaming pumps are usually dry pumps. it's either crud or install height or? something is starving it
inspect your main relay....maybe you have poor solders on the joints...

Check the ground. Bad grounds equal high amperage. Which equals noise. You are burning the brushes up in the pump. Also the reason you can hear it change with the turn signals. I would test all the grounds on the car. Even add some. Everything is fighting each other for a ground.

it can also be why the tone change is heard when extra electrical load is aplied to your electrical system.
i suggest a 4 ga wire upgrade under the hood.
you should use at least 3 wires
one from the 12V of the alt to battery
then one from one from frame/Body to Negitive at battery
and another from Alt Bracket to Negitive at battery
