Default JDM B16a Vs B20b, 2 Questions

I'm going to do a B-series swap on my EK Sedan 1998 Auto to Manuel
But i cant figure out which engine to get, So i wanna hear Honda-Techs opinions and reason why they pick that engine.

Also, i need to know what parts to get, i know what to get on the engine but not sure about shift linkage, Brackets, mounts and should it be B or D series.

From experience, i will never buy a b16a again. Having had both of each engine, the B20 (especially the 99+ versions), will walk a B16, stock for stock. It makes more power, period! It's more fun to drive too

My last b20 swap...

Well i have a jdm obd1 b16a with 93 ls tranny. My brother had a 93 eg with a 99 b20z and a gsr tranny. He would take me off the line but at the end of 2nd gear i would pull away from him. Jdm b16a= 88-91 160 hp 111ft, 92-95 170hp 113 ft, 96-2000 170 hp 113 ft us b16a2 b16a3= 160hp 111ft
97-98 crv 126hp 133ft 99 146hp 133ft

b20 vtec is a differnt story. I have run at least 4 b20b and 3 b20z and never lost. B20 vtec walked me.

I also will never do a B16 unless one falls into my lap for free and I would only do a turbo build on it. But I would most likely sell the bottom ens and keep the head for a LS or B20 Vtec project. B16's are gutless and torqueless.

Street racing means crap, different weight of cars/options, quality of driver, ect. If you had track numbers, it might actually mean something.

The B20Z is under rated from factory, and when run with any normal exhaust manifold or header actually makes in stock form in the neighborhood of 154-156hp and 136.138ft lbs tq. It does have a very different powerband, and if used properly, can really hold it's own. I also tried running a number of ecu's and found the PR4 worked best on this engine.

Yup, b20b has a low end and b16a has high end, i also heard you can do much more to b16a like turbo and so on, but if it was a b20z ill rather get the z.

I asked my friend the same thing, cept compared to a GSR motor...

My friend has had these motors in his eg hatch:

GSR
LS
B20B4 (usdm)
B20B (JDM High comp)

and of all of them, he said the JDM B20B is hands down his favorite motor and funnest. He pretty much convinced me to do one as well. Hope this helps!

One word: torque. please dont waste your money and time on a b16 unless your going to boost it.you will not be happy trust me. People are going to do what they want regardless, you dont need a bunch of opinions from a forum to make up your mind. this could be avoided with a simple test drive of both setups so you dont get the ”i told you so ”

People's opinions about b16's a pretty much spot on. They like to rev, but are torqueless. All my motors I've had in my hondas have been b16's. But I can also say that every b16 (sir1, sir2 and my current b16b) that I have had has never lost to a stock b20 usdm or jdm variant. But yes, I am at the point where Im tired of no low end. Im ready to take my b16b block, 85 mm bore, gsr/itr crank/rods, p30 based pistons to finally have some torque....as well as the 12.1:1 CR and 1979cc's that set-up will net. Displacement is a wiser choice.

Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.

Best answer I got so far, thanks for your legit statement and yeah I know there torque-less but the power it has, And if you want torque why don't you get a b16 tranny it has short gears

Aaron Cayabyab I did state why I did not like the B16 motor. It has no low end power and not torque and its top end powers leaves much to be desired. My Stock B18B1 walked B16s. The shorter geared trans does little to help a B16s chances.

b18b and b20 walking b16s? Im sorry but Im going to have to throw the b.s. flag in on this one. They get out the hole quicker cuz of the torque but by second the 1.6 is flying past ya.

Like someone else posted, different chassis, trans, driver make a difference. But no, the b16 is quicker.

I ment to post that my jdm obd1 b16a is in a 91 hatch. I have had the jap tranny. It was geared way to low for my daily driver needs. It was a world of difference in take off compared to the 93 ls tranny. Like somebody else posted, take a ride in both if you can. Make your own decision .

I can't believe the ignorant comments from people. I have "owned", many of all of these engines

Do you even realize there is more than one version of the B20??? Have you even owned one? Do you know the difference between a B20B and a B20Z I won't even bother explaining, do some research and stop sticking your foot in mouth

Being in California You have Smog to worry about so B20 is out as it's classified as a light duty truck engine. Go with a '98 LS, or GSR.

I do have know the difference. Actually I have 3 in my garage for sale. 2 b20bs and 1 with a p8r head. I have also had numerous b16s with just bolt ons to cams, to bottom end built and of course all tuned. And I can say with experience dating back to 2000 that yes, b16 will leave a b20.
