It really boils down to budget and intended use / whp goal.

I'd say some version of the k24 na.
Boosted, b or d.

you still havent given any indication of a budget. people can recommend everything under the sun but if you cant afford it what's the point?

A fast reliable good gas mileaged motor would be a Jdm obd0 b16a out of da xsi but since those are hard to come by I recommend either a Jdm dohc zc(bolts right in And is around 800 or so) a Jdm d15b Vtec or a d16z6 or y8 all those are reliable aren't the fastest but theyre peppy and parts are cheap and easy swap since your d series already. Plus you turbo a well built y8 and you can see some good numbers an reliability

b20, b16 trans ls 5th. Great torque and power and cruising 70 @ 3200 rpm makes great mpg. But can you do that with $1000? Maybe if you really searched a pieced the swap together. Good luck with whatever you choose.

You also haven't explained your background in turning a wrench. Unless some shop is doing this for you your most likely option (as I'm guessing at least) is going to be a dohc zc or sohc zc. It'll be the most easiest swap possible and be reliable and 'peppy'. Easy to come by and parts are all over. If you have all the tools and required **** before hand you can do the complete swap for under a thousand.

It's sad threads like this get the most attention. Swap a z6 into it then save up another $1200 turbo it and there's 200whp

Yup!

Mounts (with traction bar) 850
motor trans and ecu 1000
axles 280
exhaust 3" (myself) 150
jumper free with car
wiring (myself)
install (myself)

Doing it myself probably saved me $2000 alone! It wasnt that bad
