Just as the title says - can our A/C compressors "pump" (i.e. work) turning in the opposite direction?

how would it run backwards? do you mean as in if it will work mounted backwards? no the clutch is made to lock and spin a certain way. you need to elaberate more on your question?

do you mean will it flow backwards? kinda if the lines are swapped.

 

It sucks on one port and discharges on the other. Use the suction and discharge as you please. Why would you want to run it backwards? It is designed to run "forward". Also keep in mind it is lubricated by the refrigerant/oil charge so using it for another purpose would have to take that into consideration.

For a Ac compressor to run in reverse the motor would have to be running reverse and this is not possible.
OP what is the issue you are having and what are the high and low side pressures, out side temps and vent temps. All this info will help me point you in the correct direction to repairing your AC.

 

Either describe the problem and explain why you are asking this cryptic question. This is a tech forum not a mystery forum.

I was merely curious if I could use a '94 civic AC compressor (due to compact design, belt designation, I have them laying around etc) in an application that turns clockwise (instead of counter clockwise).

Answer is no it seems.

 

A scroll compressor only works in one direction of rotation.
