Long Island owners, theft risks?
Hey guys,
Thinking of picking up a itr fairly soon... currently living in suffolk county, long island. The car would be parked outdoors in a patroled apt. complex lot, which hasn't had a car theft in almost a decade.
Is the theft risk still as high as it was years ago, is parking in a secure garage at night still a necessity?
Thanks for the input.

Although currently no itrs park at the lot, there have been modded eg's, sti's, cobras and a viper, all of which have been unscathed; but I do recognize the r is a greater target/risk.
I appreciate the info, I'll see what storage or garage rentals exist in the area.

I'm willing to bet "if" all the cars you mentioned were left unlocked, windows down and the key in the ignition your R would come up missing first even if it had numerous safeguards to protect it. Don't take the chance!
Saying that they're a greater risk is an understatement.
All it takes is the wrong person(s) to find out your R is sitting in a parking lot. You may get away with it for a few days but, not a decade. Save yourself the headache and find a secured garage to park it in.

Simply put, it isn't worth the trouble. The caR will get stolen, you will have to go through the hassle with the cops and insurance. Ultimately your insurance premiums will rise, your time/energy/money will be lost, and you will have to go through the process of buying another car.
It's the sad truth. Thieves ruin this sport, as do those who buy stolen parts.

YES!!! I too am in L.I and the car never sleeps outside...always garaged.
I always go by the saying "Out of sight, Out of mind"
all it will take is some scumbag to follow you home once.
And as stated earlier( it is sad but probably true)a Viper, STI, EVO, and ITR parked in the same lot unlocked, windows down chances are the ITR will be 1st to go.

i dunno how it is in NY, but my friend sold his ITR with a detachable steering wheel to someone down in san antonio texas, he parked it outside the night he got home and the car was missing the next morning. He even called the cops assuming my friend stole it... and this all happened before he even put insurance on it.
make sure you talk with your insurance about payout value before you buy one. if they cover fair rate, who cares? car gets stolen, get a check, buy something else....or another one.
this isn't a car you buy without solid theft insurance
too many eg driving hoody 24-7 wearing dirtbags who will eyefuk your car

I store my R's in a private warehouse with a state-of-the-art security system, and I still cringe everytime I hit the lights in the morning, hoping they're all still present & unharmed. The amount of paranoia that comes with owning these cars is absurd, but it is an unfortunate necessity.
Thieves are all over LI especially for an R! Even when its locked up tight I still hold my breath when I check to see if it's still there. I wouldn't do it but if you do, be careful and mindful of what's going on..
This is one benefit I have living in the middle of nowhere. I know it can happen anywhere at anytime when owning an R but at least now if the scumbags tried to get mine they'd only be getting a rolling shell. Nevertheless, I'm still nervous at times.
