i have a b20b/b16 n i was wondering which tranny i should go with b16 or b17 tranny??

 

This depends on your goals,
Im not even sure if they are different, gearing, ring gear size, ect.

But all this depends on your exact build/intentions of use.

Keep it simple go with a b16, or a GSR transmisson.

although I would suggest the GSR more, Im to believe that the B16 trans has weaker syncros, and a smaller ring gear, correct me if im wrong.
But depending on the output of his 2L, and the use it will go through, B16 trans will probably not last that long with hard driving/launching.
Although it is geared more aggresivley.

Thats why I ask what the build is and what conditions it would be under.

And if the B17 trans is identifiable, I would leave it in the market for those restoring or trying to source one for 92-93 GSR, IMO

 

its going to b a daily driver/ and ill run it here n there lol n probably go all motor.. n i think its cable cuz its old school ones like 93 ithink..

 

B16 your RPMs will be much higher cruising the freeway, that is if you do that regularly.
GSR is geared a slight less agressive and much stronger.

Me personally I would get a B16 trans. Basically whatever is out there on the market. You can check all the specs of each transmission via here, or google,

basically i already have a b16tranny, but i was just asking cuz if anything i would sell that and get a b17... and a type r tranny do sound nice... what u heard bout the type r trannys?

 

I can't speak to which one being stronger. However, I have beaten on my friend's 00 Si and haven't hurt anything. **knocks on wood**


If you already have the B16, keep it and consider doing upgrades to it. ie, LS 5 gear ( would get the RPM's nice and low for highway driving. A diferent final drive and definetly a LSD.

A Type R trans is nice, but they come at a steep price. 1K+ more if they have been rebuilt or upgraded. Be VERY careful buying used B's transmissions. They are very well known to have the 2nd/3rd syncro issues, and people wont always tell you the trans is basicly junk.

They have tested 99-00 SI stock with the high reving stock B16 trans, against same car with lower reving LS trans.
They tested gas mileage on both of these units with long term freeway driving conditions, and remarkably the B16 higher reving setup netted slightly better mileage

 

Really? Probually just a difernence in the engines. Swap the transmissions and lets see what they do.

just swapped transmissions.

The ecu's are mapped to stay in closed loop/stoich fueling for these particular vehicles even around 4,000 RPM sustained in low load conditions,
RPMS dont matter with fuel consumption just as long as the car is fueling the same and covering the same amount of distance in the same amount of time.

My guess as to why the Si with th LS trans was a tad bit worse in fuel economy was that the ecu was programmed for the gearing of the B16 trans,
And while passing/accending up hills with the LS trans, the ECU transitions into open loop more often. But with the correct gearing of the B16 trans, you can stay in fifth and give little input to the throttle thus not triggering the CL/OL transition, cause the gearing is already at that sweet spot.
Bottom line is the gearing of the LS trans requires more throttle input.

92 gsr it's the same gear ratio as the b16a xsi trans no difference at all both have a 4,4 final every gear is the same they are both cable trans

 

B17 comes in a 92 GSR, it's the same thing as the b16a XSi(cable) but with no LSD they have the same gear ratio and same final I've heard the B17 is a stronger trans, I had it in my DA9 never gave me a problem, I have a LS in my bubble now and I don't like it, I'm looking for a B17 now to buy early '90s are always better quality parts.

 

if both transmissions you are talking about are cable... then there is no difference between the b17 or b16 other then input shaft. the gearing is almost the same and still has what many consider weak synchros.

also a b17 trans is not easily identifiable. the case would say ys1, which is 90-93 b18a1 and 92-93 b17... the 92-93 uses a bigger input shaft allowing you to stay cable but use hydro internals.

also keep in mind that any b16 trans you find has most likely been beat and will need a rebuild.

*if you are cable, use a cable trans. if u are hydro, use a hydro trans. no point going through the hastle of converting. as for the b20b, i would personally use a gsr trans if hydro. the LS is long geared and works just fine, but a b16/gsr trans will be funner and give the feel of a better powerband
