Default axle popped out? 91 civic dx

I was driving along on the highway and i decided to drop from 5th gear to 4th gear to exit off and deaccelerate, as soon as i did that the car went to idle and i rev it, i took it out of 4th gear maybe thinking my 4th gear had an issue and put it in 5th same thing just idle and when i rev its like its in neutral. i pull over and i could not get the car to move in any gear including reverse, when i put it in any gear the car revs up like in neutral and i see the speed guage moving like im actually driving at a speed. i got the car towed home.

next day im looking around the engine bay to see if i can find an issue and i look behind the intake manifold at the driverside axle and it appears to be popped out of the differential, i didnt have time to fix it tho i will try to push it back in.

my question is would this cause my car to be disabled with one axle popped out, i mean it was not moving at all once that happened just rev up?

If the entire axle stub came out (you could see the splined end that goes inside the transmission), it's likely an issue with the clip on the end.

Or the axle wasn't fully seated to begin with- usually it will come out on the first test drive, though.

I'm assuming the plunge joint didn't just come apart. If an axle is going to come apart, usually it's the joint at the wheel hub end.
