Default Can you tell an axle is broken off the car?

My driver side axle isnt going in worth DICK. All the pushing in the world isnt seating the piece of ****. WITHOUT removing the boot closest to the trans, can you tell if the axle has broken off inside there? (between the trans boot and the bar part of the axle) If i spin the whole axle while installed the wheels spin so is this an indicator that its not broken at that spot? I ask because i pulled on that side instead of prying it out with a screwdriver (like a dumb****) and it extended the boot all the way out....

Its probably broken on the inside if you pulled on it hard with it being in the Trans. It should still be about to seat in the Trans though

Ok i only pulled hard enough to extend the boot out fully. Would the axle be floppy and just sag if it was broke in that spot? Its not but i wanna make sure before having to redo this all over again. I have tried 2 different axle seals and they are installed nice and flush all the way around and the clip on the end of the axle is new and good and they still wont seat FULLY. ahhhhh!!!!!! they did jsut the other day though so i know they do ! 3 hours of sweating to death and theres still a gap between the axle and trans housing. What am i doing wrong? I have even put a jack on the arm to make it level so it would slide right in but nopeeeeee. I dont do ghetto hammering but read online that some use a rubber hammer to pound it in. That seems like a nice way to mess it up for sure.

Would you hear it crack or anything if its broke at that spot? I need a more sure diagnosis of this please. Any tests i can do ? to see if its broke between the boot and the axle itself on the trans side (without removing the boot)

Can you somehow post up a picture? Maybe we can see if anything is wrong? And you might have a broken axle but if that's the point why not take it all the way out and get a different axle and take a look inside while you are at it to see if anything is in there obstructing you axle from seating correctly!

No matter what i do the axle doesnt fit back inside all the way. The differential makes no noise and nothing is blocking it. This axle was just in the transmission before but now wont go back in after putting the transmission back in the car. Theres a gap enough to still see the smooth machine part of the axle when its as far as it will go. It slides in freely put wont seat all the way in. I have NEVER had this much trouble with an axle. Amazing. Could it be these aftermarket seals? are they really THIS shitty? Why would the seal prevent it from going in all the way?

A pic haha sure! as soon as i can stand looking at that ****ing car again. Ill take a pic in the morning.

Try turning the axle while you push in. It's worked for me a couple of times. Good luck sir.

rubber mallet works like a champ. even a reg hammer will work just dont hit it on the splines. just tap it on the housing

Ok i've tried all those things and im starting to think this is something more grim. There's still a bit of gap, if i twist or pound any harder i feel im going to break something in the differential.

Im thinking... that possibly the diff wasn't fully seated inside the transmission when reassembled.. but if thats the case i imagine the mainshafts woulda been locked up which they're not... anyone have any info on this? personal experience? I cannot begin to test drive the damn car because of this axle crap not fully seating. Neither axle is fully seating.... Heres a pic. Yes very minor gap here but not fully seating !

Also on my second set of axle seals! tried them out farther and in the housing deeper and flush. Same **** !

With the knuckle removed or swung out of the way, pop the inner joint out again, start it in the splines in the diff and then grab the out joint and shove in with a sharp snap. Don't hit the end of the axle and don't use steady even pressure, a sharp snap will seat it.

Note: you may need to rotate the axle a bit if it wont seat the first time.

Pull the boot off and make sure the bearings are still in place.

When the cars on the jack stands the axle only turns on the part nearest the diff the rest doesnt. Its broken. Why are these things so easy to break by pulling on them the wrong direction?

Thanks 94eg and hiden and all the rest of you.

Because they're made to flex for suspension travel, not move in and out. Would you expect your brake pads to work correctly if the disc was wobbling on the hub?

its not "broken" the bearings probly just came unseated, pop the boot off and put them back where they belong(its pretty self explanatory when the boots off) then zip tie it back on if you dont have those metal clamps

This.

Also, have fun. It's one hell of a messy process. Make sure not to get any dirt in there.
