Default CODES P0700 P0740

Hi all, I am new to this site.

I have a 1999 Honda accord, with 300k miles on it. We bought it 7 years ago with 146 miles on it. So we have put more than 150 miles on it, never had a problem. Just the regular maintenance work.

Last week, my hubby noticed a difference on the way it shifts. So he took it to our local mechanic to take a look at it. The mechanic looked at it and test drove it and said that he really didnt think there is something wrong with it.

My husband drove home, the next day he happened to check the under the hood and found out that the cap for the transmission fluid tank was not put back. So it was left uncovered for almost 24 hours. He took it back to the shop. The cap was actually next to it, so the mechanic put it back and told him to add fluid as its kinda low. My husband bought fluid from autozone and put it in.

Thats when the problem started. Hard time shifting gear. we got the codes and it came up p0700 and p0740. My husband didnt drive the car to work anymore as he is scared that the condition might worsen.

Any help is appreciated on what we can do. We really have no budget to take this to the shop so Im hoping that it is a simple fixed that we can do ourselves.

Right, Honda ATF or Castrol Multi-Import ATF works as a substitute.

Now you need to flush it out. Here's an entertaining how-to for your hopefully handy hubby.

Make sure you stop buy your local Honda dealer and buy some Honda ATF. Do not use any other brand.

We did one drain and refill and the check engine light was gone!

It's shifting a lot better now, although there is still a little nodge when it gets to a stop.

We will two more rounds of drain and refill tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help guys!!!
